I have gotten a 1976 CJ 5 from the deep bushes at our Scout camp. I can find no information about the military use of this vehicle. I am sure that the US Army had this vehicle because it still had the Army tag on the jeep. It has never been registered or titled. The paint is completely OD and is not a paint over. The firewall, under the dash and everything is od. Am trying to restore and parts are not a problem to get. Just looking for information about the military use of the vehicle. G. Bolen

    Welcome from Va!

There was no military version of the CJ5 in 1976. Pictures will help folks here identify what you have. Are you sure it is a 76? Post some pics of the jeep and the military ID plastes and lets have a look!

There *were* civilian CJs used on military bases in the US, but nowhere near the numbers of M-38A1 and M-151 MUTTS that were ordered. Mostly the CJs were used as maintenance and delivery-type vehicles. I also remember there being a few DJ-5s used on Ft. Sill, OK in the early 80s...

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

we courtesy delivered 12 1981 CJ7s to March Air Force Base (SAC) for MP patrol use around the base
nothing special about them other than AF blue paint jobs
    258/auto....spotlights
    those kids tore them up....

I can't remember now and couldn't find anything but I remember reading somewhere about a military CJ7 being built for export.

Since the CJ5's weren't used by the military, it's probably a M151. I drove those in MP School back in 81. They were made by Ford. However, I do agree that pictures would be most useful.

I came across a '73 US Army CJ5 a while back, so I know there were a few. Not sure what all years or models they used. This was basically a stock CJ painted OD green with white stenciled lettering and had all the data plates on the dash.

    michigan_pinstripes I'm not lost, I'm wandering

Back in '84 we had a stock CJ-5 out of the post motorpool assigned to us because we were short of car that fell apart (Military Police). The motorpool never gave us anything "nice" and thought it would be funny to give us this "beater" Jeep.

Some of us fought over the Jeep for midnight shift while others scratched their heads wondering why we wanted this "thing" for patrol. I never knew the year, just that it had a metal hard top, 3 speed (I think), inline 6 and FUN to drive!! I was thinking it was a 76-79, not sure. We usually were found in the training area (aka offroad park) on midnight trail rides! 8) Only once did we come upon troops training  :D

Before exiting the army in 1979 I drove what I thought was a new cj5 as part of a range control unit. It was a six cylinder but definitely a modified civilian model. As I recall it was OD green, stripped down with no rear seat. I recently bought a 1977 that indicates on the title "MP" instead of "CJ" and I am trying to find more information on it and see if it is a military version or a cj. It also has not rear seat but has a 304 V8 and 3 speed. Its color is battleship grey. Any ideas?.
