We are getting some pretty decent snow and ice here in Indiana right now and I was wondering what you guys recommend as to engaging 4wd and when driving to work in the morning. I thought I would just run with the lockers in and engage the transfer when needed. But, I would really like to just run 4wd all the time on the commute to work in the morning to be on the safe side, tractionally speaking.

If roads are snow covered I personally would run 4WD HI to avoid fishtailing and or spinning out.

I don't have lockers on my CJ. I went out last year in about 8" of snow.
I went in 2 wheel drive and it couldn't move well. The front wheels were
plowing the street!!! The rear end fish tailed around the front end. I shifted
in 4wd high and had no problem what so ever.

I only use it when needed in my cherokee, it wont stop you from spinning out on ice just gets you moving in the snow to start off.

4wd has always helped me with spin outs. Point the wheel and put the hammer down to get her straightened out.

Using 4WD is ok as long as the roads are slippery. There seems to be a feeling among my fellow 4WD drivers up here that your a wuss if you use 4WD all the time the roads are slippery (most of the time in Northern MI in winter). I guess I'm a wuss, I like the way it feels as far as traction, if I start to slip I can regain traction by working the throttle and steering. I do notice in my my Dodge 2500 4x4 I don't use 4WD as much, it has a posi rear end and it is heavy. I've been surprised a few times with wind and slippery roads and was glad the Jeep was in 4WD.

also IN my view all terrain tires work better in the snow than mud tires.

4H is your best bet along with good tires. I just changed mine out on Wednesday afternoon a week early in preparation for the Snow we were supposed to get last.

I put mine in 4H before I pulled out of the parking lot and had no issues with going to the store on my way home or getting out this morning.

Yea, I'll second the mud tires. Took mine out last night at 3am after I got home so I could play in the snow covered streets to see how it did. I think I'll be driving my 2wd f150 to work in snow and not wish I had the jeep. Unless I get some snow tires for the winter. Even in 4wd I was fishtailing all over. I think my problem was the slush. The tires were wide enough that the weight of the jeep was spread out too much and I was floating ontop of the slush.

On my gravel, 6" snow covered road that hardly anyone had been down yet, it went everywhere I wanted it to and never had a problem with traction. Same speeds. Go figure.

I've had BFG MTs and BFG ATs on the TJ in the past.

The ATs BY FAR outdo the MTs in snow on streets and in deep snow for me. In deep-deep snow something like an MT might do better but for general driving the ATs are what I'd want hands down for most of my normal driving too/from work etc.

It's all about siping. I'm amazed how well mannered the summer tires on the Golf are. I had them siped. Still, the snow tires are going on this weekend when it makes it into the 40s up from the negatives.

What little snow we get here I just left the YJ in 2wd.
Its locked in the rear though.
The only time I used 4wd was on a few steep hills, and then pulling a pick up and a Caddy out of a ditch.
It has Pro Comp MTs on it and they did great. The are siped though.
