Driving arround this morning, after filling the under-seat tank, I smelled fumes. Felt arround the filler neck and it's wet, seems to be seeping arround the new cap. It's a vented cap so is there anything that can be done about it or do just not fill it as much?

I get a whiff too if I park on an incline, filler down. I just try not to fill it up into the neck-

This is a very common problem with ECJ's. Since the tanks aren't vented, the caps provide venting. Unfortunately what you get is a cap that doesn't seal. I try to put only about 5 gal at a time in mine, but I also have a rear tank that I run on.

Either don't fill 'em up all the way, or don't ever make a sharp right turn. :D

Light a cigarette and the smoke & fire will hide the smell of gasoline! Just Kidding.

All of my past jeeps with the tank under the seat had this same problem. Just as the others did, I did not fill it all the way up.

Seems like I remember a posting where a guy made a homemade rubber vent hose that was attached near the end filler neck and the other end of the hose went under his jeep!

I'm not sure I would want my fuel tank vent to go under the Jeep.
Just wondering if you could get a non-vented cap and put in a hose from the fuel filler area that goes to the carb/air filter? Kinda like a shade tree evap setup? The tank would then be vented but the fumes would go into the carberator.
I usually think of this plan every time I fill the tank and get gassed. Or, trail ride on side hill. Or, make a sharp turn....

Jeez. They're '50's vehicles, well, a '40's design really. They all smelled back then. That's how you know if you have gas left if the gauge is kaput. With no emissions parts on 'em at all and a really basic carb you get that authentic vintage pollution stink. Too bad todays gas does not smell like the old stuff did. R)

A vapor recovery system would be easy to retrofit. I had an under-seat aux tank on my '73, and tried tying the filler neck vent into the vapor recovery. I found that the cap, even with the in-cap vent plugged, didn't seal well enough to divert vapors from the tank tothe recovery system. Basically I ended up venting the main tank into the aux tank, so I plugged the aux connection and went back to the vented cap.

I drilled into the filler neck, inside the body, and fitted a brass nipple. Sealed with liquid steel.

I used some gasket material and just double up on the gasket around the lid. Helped alot. I only leaked when parked on a side hill on the trail.
