Ah Nuts!

    Well it's happened again:mad:

    Last week it was that &^$#$%^ nut on the tranny output shaft that I couldn't find a socket that fit for three days that turned out to be LOOSE anyhow.

    Today it was the front axle nuts. Ah Ha! I said- Finally I get to use that Special Wheel Nut Socket I bought Two Years Ago & Never Needed Till Now!

    So I'se goes to slip the socket over the lock nut & IT DOESN"T &^$#$%^ FIT!

    Grrrr.

    I dig out the digital caliper & measure to socket, 2.01+/". Since the hub hole is shallow this time I can fit the caliper in to measure the nut- 2.06+/-".

    Really Grrrr.

    To late to get my money back on the socket so its off to the bench for Fun with Die Grinder & File. Twenty minutes & two broken grinding wheels later I've got the socket opened up enough to fit the nuts.

    Guess What ? IT STILL WON"T GO ON :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad:

    After cleaning some more goop out of the hub it becomes apparent that someone, sometime, somewheres had previuosly taken the nuts off & re-installed them with what must have been a cold chisel & a BFH. the nut corners were messed up beyond belief.

    O.K. so much for doing it the right way, I grab my own chisel & BFH & give the first nut a tap.

    To say it spun would be an understatement.

    Same thing with the rest.

    Kinda makes you wonder how they could messed up the nuts that much getting them not that tight.

    Whoever played with Maggie's drivetrain last had obviously not heard about the benifits of tightening fasteners. The bellhousing was literally falling apart from the tranny, the bellhousing-engine bolts were scarcely tight, as were(n't) the tranny-xfer case bolts. If fact, apart from the head bolts the only ones I think I've found tight were the ones rusted so badly I had to cut the heads off with the grinder.

    Ah my dad must have had your Jeep. When the original axle for Brew came apart I watched him loosen the spindle nut with the coldchisle and a hammer. After that I told him he can't touch my Jeep unless I am there to supervise.

    You mean they make sockets that big? I thought a hammer and cold chisel was the proper tool.R)

    My Dad hammer and chisel'd for years with no problems - til I tried to use a socket. :rofl:

    Spend half my life grinding those nuts smooth again so I can use the socket again . Bill

    I dont think they had the technology back in the 50's and 60's to make sockets that big I think standard issue was a bfh and a cold chisel.R)

    got dad's socket for the spindles. stamped steel with "dualmatic" embossed in. works really good.

    yeah, well i thought i'd do it the right way up until my special socket wrung out the driver hole and i had to use a pipe wrench around it... hammer and chisel it is from now on.

    So does anyone know what the real size socket is need to remove the spindle nut. I have 2" socket that I thought would work but doesn't seem to fit.

    Hammer and chisel is how I got the yoke nut off of my SM465.:oops: Man was that tight.

    I did use the right socket to get the new nut back on to the transfer case gear. If that helps.:rofl:

    I think I used an 1 1/4" six point socket. FYI.

    It looks like the previous owner used the hammer and chisel method and I don't know how much more they can take. I ordered the closet spindle nut sucket my FLAPS had which was 2 3/32 so I'll se tomorrow it that fits.

    Do you have a 2 1/16". I saw this on another thread but my FLAPS didn't have one smaller than 2 3/32. I'd be willing to pay shipping both ways if I could borrow it.
