throttle stalling

I recently acquired a 55 willys cj5...I got it running pretty well...the four wheel drive is kicking also really well.

The engine needed some TLC like getting the three inches of sludge out of the oil canister, plugs new coil etc...i starts right up but on acceleration it starts to stall until gunned a few times...but when I slowly acclerate the engine stalls.

I removed the air cleaner from the carb and covered the throat with my hand partially and this problem goes away..

Is this something to do with the air fuel mixture or some other adjustment?

Also is SAE 30 the best oil to use?

    Appreciate any help...

Since you said oil canister I assume F-head in it, probably YF carb. You pretty much diagnosed fuel starvation. Could be metering rod adjustment, accelerator pump bad. Sounds like it needs a cleaning/rebuild since it sounds like a long time since it's had one. Also 30 weight would be fine.

Also welcome to the board. When you get a chance why don't you post in the introduction section about the Jeep and where you're from, etc.

Also, the fuel line may be plugged, filter could be plugged, or the fuel pump may be headed south. I've had a piece of debris plug the line right at the bottom of the tank. Take the fuel line off the carb and put it in a can and bump the engine over a few times. You should get a fairly substantial burst of fuel every time the pump kicks. If you don't, take the inlet line to the pump off and see if you have any flow. If not, the line is plugged somewhere between the tank and pump. You can blow some air back through the line to clear it, just make sure you do it outside with the cap off the tank. If all this checks out, take the air cleaner off the carb. With the engine off, look down the carb and stroke the throttle. You should see a squirt of gas. If you don't, the accelerator pump in the carb is likely bad. Time to rebuild the carb...might not be a bad idea regardless. Let us know how it works out

    Thanks for the tips...
its a replacement solex carb and is somewhat new, so I will start with the fuel line and work my way up...its a plan at least.

The above postings have some great points.

My 56 CJ5 also has the solex carburetor. I have had several similar problems. Replaced everything except the carb. and the fuel line from the pump to the carb.

One thing bad on mine was the fuel line from the tank to the fuel pump was clogged. Replaced the fuel line and she ran great.

Also when you look at the fuel line to the carb, look at the little brass cap just below the fuel inlet line. Take it out and inside this brass cap is a small cylinder shaped fuel filter screen. Mine was clogged with some rust. I took it out and cleaned it out with an old tooth brush and hot water and soap. I also ordered a carb rebuild kit which I don't need. I never even opened it and will be sending it back.

I took my jeep for a spin to this afternoon, and she started acting like yours is doing. Kind of starving for fuel. So I am kind of in the same boat as you. I am going to check it out in the next few evenings. Hopefully you will get yours working ok.
Keep us posted on how you do.

    Regards

I ended up checking my fuel line from tank to carb...it checked out okay.

The fuel pump seems to be working well enough, it fills up the fuel filter good so I started looking at the carb, sure enough gas doesnt start jetting until the throttle is way out...accelerator pump...looks like a carb rebuild.

I have the original carter carb...im gonna rebuild that one.

Good tip on the mesh screen below the fuel inlet on the carb...mine was full of rust deposits...there is a second mesh filter by that one to check also.

there are at least one more of those fuel filters on the solex carb by the way. right by the one you described...also a mesh screen under the hex nut, there might be another.

I could not find a rebuild kit for the original carter, so I ended up getting a remanuf carter from kaiser willlys. sure nuff that did the trick on that stalling.

I was reading up on the solex and carter carbs. All I heard about the solex was it being problematic whereas the carter has been described as reliable and predictable. Overall the cj runs really nice with the carter.

does anyone know where to get a rebuild kit for the carter? I am also looking for an oil canister mount for the engine block, right now my canister is mounted to the fender!
