I just purchased a used 63 cj-5 recently. I have lots of questions but I need a few answers pretty soon. The serial no. is 57548 and the engine has 807896 on the block.Jeep runs but needs brakes and a complete lube. It's a four speed four cylinder with a two window windshield. It has a pto in the back. The body has a few rust holes in the floor about the size of a quarter. I need new wheels and tires as the stock ones have rusted at the valve stem. Will late model wheels fit and how big a tire should I put on? If the brake drums are good should I stay with 9 inch stuff or replace with 11 inch?

Welcome from KS! Whereabouts you hale from?

Sounds like a winner the T98 is a popular trans around here.

    PTO is popular too. ;)

Late model wheels? As in YJ/TJ? No. The bolt pattern is the wrong size.

Brakes are your perrogative. Most of us here I think would agree 11" is the way to go, or disk brakes. YMMV.

I am from the hills of western North Carolina. If the drums are good, probably just going to do wheel cylinders and shoes. The master is good. Another question? What row bar will fit the 63?

    Howdy from W. MI.

Do the 11". The 9", even when all there and working, pretty much suck...;)

There are a couple folks from North Carolina. We are spread out fairly well, but some over there too. Where are you located?

Hey Brad! One of our members lives near Asheville as well.

Well, he doesn't have an early 5 anymore but he's owned 2. ;)

    Welcome from NJ.
I am in the middle of converting from 9" to 11" brakes. Boyink is being polite when he says 9" brakes suck.

Since Sparky doesn't own a TJ anymore, pretty much all real jeep wheels will fit.:D Seriously though they are a 5 on 5 1/2" pattern, you can use 15" or 16" wheels. 16" were factory or a factory option and 15" were standard on the later cj's thru 86.

Welcome. I am over in Burlington and just recently redid a '63. The 9" brakes take a lot of foot power to get the beast stopped. I would love to change over to 11" brakes as soon as funds permit. I've been through Pisgah Forest before. Lovely country for Jeep rides. Good luck with your Jeep.

Got pics? Would like to see this two-piece windshield. Does the glass tilt out at the bottom?
11" brakes are the way to go, with a dual-circuit master cylinder. Drill the drums if you are planning alot of water crossings and want to have brakes on the other side...
