Need a little help...

    First off, sorry for the pic quality, the digicam is being charged and the camera phone is going to have to do. Also, sorry for not being too incredibly mechanical as the Jeep is really my first real attempt at tinkering with anything.

    I'm having some issues getting the Jeep to start. Its rough but with the choke closed, it will startup after several attempts but will only idle for a few seconds. Giving it gas while idling will only keep it running for a few seconds more.

    I'm trying to rule out things like the fuel filter, fuel pump, etc and in the process I ran across the pictured item and can't seem to identify it in my Chilton Manual. Its on top of the fuel pump separated by a few inches of hose.

    It's possible that you're not getting enough gas flowing to the engine. How long has this been sitting without running? Has it ever run?

    If you disconnect the fuel line on the carburetor side of the fuel filter (pictured item) and have someone turn the engine over, you should see a good supply of fuel coming out of the line (have something to catch the fuel and watch out for the fan & belt and other turning/moving parts)... If you get enough fuel here, work your way to the carburetor, if not work towards the fuel pump.

    You might also try spraying starting fluid down the carburetor throat while someone is trying to start it - be careful here that it doesn't flare up on you and don't overdo it.

    It has been runnng (fairly strong) since I've had it (about 4 months) and recently (in the span of about 2-3 outings) started showing signs of this problem. It started with hesitation and near stalling on accelleration and finally got to the point where it just wouldn't start (without a lot of effort) and would not run for more than a few seconds after being started.

    It definitely sounds like not enough fuel getting to the engine. I wasn't sure if the pump or the filter was the issue, or both....or the carb. I'll disconnect it this evening and see if it points me in the right direction.

    Fuel filter and pump are pretty cheap so I would replace both now. Sounds like there is some sort of blockage in there somewhere. Get some carb cleaner and spray that in the carb. Can't hurt any, can it???

    Just in case you find your fuel delivery is OK...

    What ignition are you running? Any chance you've got burned/pitted points?

    my 74 5 would run rich and stall underload. after it warmed-up it would stall and flood. i tweaked and rebuilt my carb, no luck. i thought i needed a new one till i checked the timing. turns out my timing chain was so worn i could rotate the crank about a 1/4 turn before the rest of the engine moved. i replaced the timing chian and proporly timed the engine. then most of my ignition problems were fixed. it is amazing how much better the engine runs now.

    Well, I'm happy to say it was only the fuel filter. Replaced it (and the battery, which is a whole other story) and took it for a ride and it looks like it is ready to start scaring little kids again :)
