OK I am ready to buy a Solex. I read past threads which said how easy it is to install. What about the manual choke and throttle? Does the Solex come with them, do I have to change something, or is there different model carbs for different years?

Just buy one for whichever engine you have, L head or F head. I'm assuming you have the F head? Everything is on the carb, there might be an extra bracket with it, I think one came with mine. When you get the carb ask away with any questions you have. It's all pretty simple and straight forward. :hurrican:

Is that a worthy upgrade to do? Is there enough difference between the Solex and the Carter YF to make it worthwhile? I have no experience yet with either, but I can go with either one when I get to that point.

I had a Solex on my M38A1 and was real happy with it. The old carb was just worn beyond economic repair so it was a good move for me. Mike

When you got the Solex was it set up for a manual choke and throttle?

It was set up for a manual choke, it was not set up for a hand throttle. My hand throttle was long gone on that JEEP so it wasn't a problem. Mike

So I guess I can set up the idle and I wont have to worry about a hand choke

You can hook the hand throttle to the Solex with just a little bit of effort. The choke is actually not visible like a normal carb., there isn't a butterfly on top. You'll have to see the carb. to understand. :hurrican:

The choke on a Solex isn't an air-depriving mechanism to enrich the idle mixture, it is a fuel-enrichening mechanism. Same effect, different means to the end.

Go for the Solex, you'll be glad that you did!

I found it definitely worth doing. I was tired of the carter flooding out all the time even after a couple of rebuilds. Gets old real fast.

My Solex was set up for both choke and throttle (I have the F-head 134 engine). If you buy one, do NOT get it from JC Whitney. I got one from them and the linkage was NOT right at all. Got another one from Willys Works in Arizona and it was correct.

Check all the bolts holding the carb together when you get it and make sure they are snug. If not, snug them up (don't overtighten).

The cheapest price I've found on those is $115 at Kaiser-Willys in Aiken, SC, but I haven't searched far and wide yet. Anybody else seen a better price, or is that a good deal?

You could try Walck's, his prices are always the cheapest I've seen. $115 is a pretty good deal anyway.

Walck's was $119.95, $4.95 higher, but that's not enough to worry about, especially if I was getting a bunch of other stuff too. He is usually the cheapest, so the savings on other parts would make up that $5 difference quickly.

The YF that I have has only seen 19 years of service, and 30 years in storage, so I'll most likely rebuild it first to see how it does before I buy a Solex.

http://www.thecarburetorshop.com/ This guy has the correct parts for the YF. Expensive but you get stuff that works. I bought from him for the carb. on the wagon, different YF than on F-heads. Been a year and a half and so far it works fine.

Krage has the Solex for $99.95 - http://www.jeepdoc.com/catalog/partframe.asp?id=946

I was pleased with mine. The link I gave was for the F-head, back up one level if you need an L-head unit.

Installation was a breeze - 15 mins. Ran fine with no adjustments.

Will the Solex work with the original oil bath air cleaners?
