I think it's trying to say that the V-6 was a sawed off "nailhead" decendent which isn't exactly accurate IIRC. I thought most Nailhead parts didn't interchange like the timing cover assembly, heads etc. I also thought the V-8 that superceded the Nailhead was to make more parts common between V-6 & V-8.

    I dunno.

[edit] oh, I first learned to water ski behind a Buick V-6 Evinrude Tri-hull! That thing was a tank but moved out well! 8)

Hence my confusion and I think Patrick's, it's not related to a Nailhead Buick.

'Zactly. For instance, the nailhead had the distributer in the rear.......

    That question or link?

I know the link has been around here several times but don't recall the nailhead question being posed.

I've worked on many of them when my uncle had his boat shop. They had 2 horsepower versions--one with the 2G and one with a Q-jet. Would love to have one of those manifolds with the Q-jet on it now.

The 4160 Holly marine carb is an interesting conversion.

But was that a 225 marine, or the nailhead V8.... From what I understand, the nailhead was a V8, and a big block....

The nailhead is not related to the v6 in anyway no matter what the guy on the boat sight says, the distributor is only a minor difference, the head shape and how the intake bolts on is totally different from any American V8 ever built. The pushrods go thru holes in the block before they go thru the holes in the heads, the engine has a valley pan similar to Pontiacs. Here are a few pictures:

If I remember right there is actually a big block and small block version of the Nailhead engine.
The big block being the 364, 401, 425 and the small block being 264-322ci.
The nailheads all had forged cranks and rods instead of cast units.

The 225 is not related to the nailhead in any way except the fact that they are both Buicks. The nailhead converted to a V-6 would have been a real boat anchor for sure being a big-block. The 225 is actually a 300 Buick V-8 without 2 cylinders. Too bad they didnt do the 340...

Patrick: A 225 Marine. Back in the '60's I always thought they were a bit Wierd. Changed my mind now! :D

Been trying to find an old one here in Havasu with the spread bore manifold and the Q-jet. Worked Great!!!
