I took my single stick 18 out and put in a twin stick and from that moment on my transfercase won't stay in gear. i replaced the little balls and springs beside the two shift levers thinking that they may be worn out and it didn't make a difference. What other components could make it jump out of gear? I hasve no idea; i'm stumped. Any info would be so appreciative.

sounds like the shift rods are worn. best bet is to replace'm (and rebuild transfer @ same time)

Supposed to have been rebuilt could be the key. Rebuilt by whom? I'd start with the not complete engagement theory. Take the pan off and look at the gears and have someone shift it between all gear combinations too. That'll tell you what's happening with engagement.

ill third what glenn said. mine would fall out of gear after i rebuilt it, but only because i lost one of the springs omehow and waited a while before i put it in there. if those are there it should be difficult to get the shifters out of the detents (i literally have to hit mine now). otherwise it's most likely something with the shift forks, maybe the rebuilder didn't completely tighten the set screws??

If high and low stays put, it is only slipping out of 4wd into 2wd?? Is that what you are saying? There is no neutral on that lever positioning.

i talked to the guy i bought it from tonight and he said he took the guts out of an 18 small hole and had them put into a 20 housing. rebuilt consisted of bearings and seals for the most part. would the shims between the 2 levers have anything to do with it becuase i noticed there aren't any on it he just welded a thin metal plate over the levers to keep them in place.

If you're talking about the anti rattle springy clips they don't hold the shifter in place, they just keep them from vibrating/rattling. Worn gears and shafts can also cause a popping out of gear.

the bolts on the sides of the levewrs where the ball and spring go - i can't even tighten all the way down to lock or i can't move the levers at all. so i have to keep them backed off a little. i thought i would put it in 2 wheel drive and tighten it down to lock and leave it there so i could at least drive it; when i started tightening it down it pushed it out of gear.

Well, since you're obviously aware that you should be able to tighten those down it sounds like you've isolated the problem. I'm wondering if the wrong shift rods were used? If I remember correctly you did a twin stick conversion? I'm not familiar with the differences other than the ends of the single stick versus twin stick rods, or if there is any other difference.
