I just made a set of these today out of 1" Wildland Fire Hose. I thought they looked better then inter-tube covers. They can even be painted if you want to match the Jeep Color. They are kind of like the Old Style Canvas Covers from a long time ago. [IMG] Mark

Looks nice. Don't forget the hole in the bottom middle.

Funny you said that, this morning I was thinking the same thing that it needed a hole to let the water out that will collect. I am going to heat up a punch and melt a round hole in the hose to do just that! Great idea. Mark

I like it. I also like your link for attaching to the tailgate. I have seen several different methods, but they all seem to be a hassle to get throught the gate. Your design looks simple and effective.

I made my own hook for the Gate. I took a real long chain link and cut the weld out and formed it on a anvel. I did not like the one that came with the Jeep. This one will only come un-hooked if you turn it all the way up and twist it out. The old one could come un-hooked to easy. It also stays in place flat when hooked. Mark

I am a Contract Fire Fighter so I have fire hoses and I had a 1" hose that was damaged so I am using sections of it. You can't just buy the hose by the foot and they come in 50 ft lengths. Lots of 1.5 inch on EBay but very little 1 inch hose listed. Mark

I can do that for you no problem at all.
Email me at bigpawspantry.com and I can send you a pair(covers) for $10.00 which includes the shipping. Are you wanting the covers or the chain hooks or complete chains & covers?? Mark Hendershot

Hmmm. Might have to take you up on that offer! My brother's a FF as well, so I'm gonna check and see if they have any old hose first. But I'm gonna need a set for the Deuce as well as the Jeep. I'll let you know.

Okies. I gotta get home tonight and check to see if 1" will be enough for the Deuce anyway - I *think* so, but I'm not real sure. Length isn't much longer than the Jeeps, but I'll measure that as well to be sure.

The 1 inch measurement is the inside of the hose when round. If it is a snug fit a little dish soap and a peice of wire to pull them thru works great. I had 5/8" PEE Hose on the Jeep chains but it was way to tight and caused the chains to stay in a arch. The 1 inch hose I have has a very thin rubber inside liner some has thick rubber and harder to form a nice loop. Mark

I got mine as well the other day. They look great. Now all I need to do is get some chain and I can get rid of the padlocks that I have had on there for years and actually be able to open the tailgate. Tailgates are supposed to open, right?? ;)

    Thanks again.

I got some chains and some hooks, painted your covers black, and installed them yesterday. They look great. Now my tailgate is actually a tailgate again!!

    Thanks again.
