1966 Cj5.

Discussion in 'Early CJ5 and CJ6 Tech' started by Timothy Bierley, May 2, 2024.

  1. I picked up a 1966 CJ5 with a V6 225 engine in it. By the serial number the jeep was originally a 4 cylinder model and it has a T90 transmission and 5.38 gears. How did these engines proform with 5.38 gears. Wife says this

That gearing will be a little low for hwy driving but very good for off-road. Where are you in Alabama? I’m in Florida Panhandle (aka Lower Alabama)

  3. I am in Anniston about 20 miles from Talladega. I am needing a crankshaft pulley.

I’ll keep you in mind next time I go up that way.

  8. Thanks. Will a 225 crankshaft pulley interchange with a 231.

  9. I have a question the distributor and Rotor button don't look like a GM product. I went to O'Reilly's and all they had was the round rotor button and the screw on type distributor cap the distributor cap and the rotor button in my Jeep. The distributor cap has two clips like my f head and the rotor button looks like the f head also.

Not all the V6s used a Delco distributor (easily identified by the round rotor and the door in the cap for adjusting pionts)
Some used a prestolite distributor, sounds like what you have.

A very popular upgrade is a stock 1976/77 231 oddfire HEI ignition. If you have the prestolite distributor, the swap may be a better long term investment.
