67 Hubcaps, Ss Or Chrome Plated?

I have 6 of the Kaiser hubcaps, a couple are nice-ish. Most have dings. I've restored SS trim to new condition by slowly working it with small hammers, a homemade dolly, fine files, sandpaper and a polish. These look like SS but there is some rust bleed on them but only where they were on a steel wheel. I'm good if they're SS but I can ruin them quick if they're plated steel. Any insights? thanks.

 

Try a magnet. Some SS alloys will hold a magnet, others not. So if a magnet won't stick it's SS. If it will stick it could be either.

 

I’ll say the dogdish hubcaps and full turbine/Tux hubcaps are stainless. I’m 99% sure.
I’ve worked moderate dents out of the dogdish hubcaps years ago, but they were so thin, plus the metal stretched with the original dents, so I could never get them very good. The most effective way I used was with old-school “body spoons” where you slap the metal, helping it shrink.the metal back. I also used hardwood shaped dowels to push the dents out. I’ve had fair success, but when polished, the still didn’t look very good; very wavy. They will polish like chrome with the right compond.

Thanks. They look like SS. I bought a shrinking wheel kit from a metal guru a few years back and it works great. There were 2 sizes, I've only used the larger of the two. The smaller will fit on a right angle grinder. If you can pop the dent out and get it high, you can bring it back with these discs. I didn't want to try it if they were plated though. This will make a fun project this winter.
