    Hello guys,
My CJ5 had some type of maybe GM steering column or??, It's junk with the plastic broken... So I am trying to come op with a steering column that is tilt, manual and has the same splined end as this one. Does anybody know what years of GM or otherwise mfg. columns that would have the splined end. I only see the D end style, Thought I'd reach out to others here. Maybe there is a new shaft to the gear box with a D end or someway to covert over. Anyways comments would be appreciated.

Welcome from Michigan, Doesn't a 74 have a GM steering box, you are in the Early CJ5 Column, we have the Ross steering box.

74 didn't come with a tilt column so no way to really answer your question.
    Can you post pics?

Of the aftermarket tilt columns I have seen, they come ready for the double D shaft. My column is from a '75 or '76 Chevy Monza
modified for length. It used a spline x spline u-joint. I used the upper splined yoke and fitted to a keyed style yoke lower with 2
set screws. I imagine you could do a similar type swap only reversed and using a double D style upper yoke and spline lower. you would need the 'D' style u-joint.
This picture is most likely similar to yours. Credit to a post made by Doug.

The 1980’s CJ’s could have come with tilt columns, so later models might be possible donors. I don’t know the spline diameter or count, but that might be a place to start.

Thanks guys! Yes - the current whatever model column is on it, has a 48 spline end, which I believe was the same as the factory provided column. I believe this because I ordered a new shaft to the gear box for a 74 CJ5 and that is this same count / design also. CJ from 76 and up as well as other models did have a 48 spline also I believe but hard to find one with tilt and one no key switch. Heidt company makes adpaters to go from a DD column output on a column to spline but I need to call them to see if they offer a 48 spline end. That opens up the used part options. I'll probably go with a Flaming River which has 48 spline end columns, tilt and no key switch in the $500 range.

I just installed power steering in my 74 with the stock column, so I had to count mine. My steering shaft out of the column 3/4" 36 spline. A tip for counting splines, take a picture head on, zoom in count half the splines X2. Took me awhile to figure that one out, cuz I'm a Boomer.

Look at the Summit brand. They are good quality and less expensive. Prob made by one of the other company’s anyway.
