I've searched around, but I can't find much info on Warn/Saturn vs Husky vs Dualmatic ODs for D18s. What are the differences between them? I've read that the Huskys have different gears than the
W/Ss do. Does that give them a different ratio?

Same design but Husky and dualmatic are metric, different gear pitch but not tooth count. Sam ratio.

Herm made a 30% OD, have on in the Orange Wagon to your left.

Yes, Herm manufactures different gearing. I think the largest consideration here is to purchase one you can still get parts for, Herm's, or Warn/Saturn. Personally, I would be looking for a serviceable Warn, even if it needed some attention. The internal differences between Warns and Saturns are relatively minor except for the shift forks. The Saturn version of the fork is close to worthless.

    Thanks all.
I have an unknown OD on my CJ now. I'm asking because I wanted to know if one OD is significantly better or worse than another, and would merit a change. If they're pretty much the same strength wise, I'll just keep what I have; unless there would be some prospect of what I have being rare, in which case I'd consider selling it and replacing it with a cheaper priced version.

Post a picture of your overdrive and I'm sure the guys here can ID it.

I'll be back home for a bit in a couple of weeks, and I'm going to ID and take pics of everything on the CJ. Right now everything is caked in grease and dirt, and I don't want to make my dad crawl under there and scrape it all off just for an identifiable picture.

I'd rather keep my OD on there now. What I meant by that is if I had a really rare OD, I would consider selling and getting a new one it to make some money.

Advance Adaptors took over the OD production from Warn. As already mentioned, the shift forks are different as the Warns had a bronze fork and the Saturn has one made of what looks like cast aluminum or something. Early Warn versions are front shift, while later Warns and all Saturns are rear shift. That change came about when Jeep went to the larger case D18. The only other difference I have noticed is the attachment of the bearings and thrust washers on the nose of the bowl gear. The Warn version used roll pins that are often broken off. As far as I know all parts between a Warn and Saturn will interchange, and you can install the bronze shift fork from a Warn into a Saturn if concerned about the strength of the part, I have never seen either one break but my experience is limited.

If you look at buying a used unit inspect it carefully. If the planetary gears, planetary hub, or bowl gear are damaged it can easily cost as much as a new unit to rebuild an old one. The main thing that leads to the demise of these units is low oil level which will quickly burn up the planetary gears.

I believe the synchronizer hub used in these things is the same as used in the T-90 transmission.

Being "rare" is not likely to mean more valuable because of parts availability. I don't think you would be able to sell any old one for enough to buy a new one, and certainly won't be able to make money by doing that.

At some point I believe there was a change from 4 planetary gears to 3 so the most desired unit is an early rear shift Warn in good condition. I would not seperate one from a jeep just to sell and buy a new one. That's just crazy talk.

It would be nice if AA reproduced the full float axles and hubs.

I believe herm is on the making side of the overdrive parts and full float axles aa is just a middle party.

Herm and his axles are both questionable. The warn full float used an internal style hub which are now difficult to find.

Thanks yall. Is there a good way to tell the 4 gear Warn from the 3 gear without taking it apart? How about figuring out IF it's a Warn in the 1st place?

What does your shift knob and lever look like? Is the lever square at the pivot?

Unfortunately I haven't seen it. I'll check it out and get lots of pics when I go home in a couple of weeks.

The knob is an aftermarket chrome ball. The lever is chromed with a bend about 1/3 of the way up.
