    A little frustrated . 1975 CJ5 , Dana 44 , 30 spline , 3.73 gears with a TracLoc .
My BIL was following me on the Hi way & says my right rear wheel was " Wobbling " . I have noticed a shake getting worse. New Timken bearings & all seals ~ 3 years ago . Put her up on the lift , wheels off , Drums & lugs on , in gear, & sure enough ......... a definite wobble on both wheels . Could it be bad Hubs ? Feels like the axels are bent ? I'm not gonna start into it until I Can locate & obtain the parts.
Thanks for any advice , Gents.
    ....Richie

    Full float conversion :twist:

I think the first step is to actually measure the runout with a dial indicator at the brim of the flange.

I'ld blame the upstate NY potholes. Especially over by the Rochester Airport.

Thanks Fella's...... These Kids are scarce & expensive too. The Alloy USA is an Omix company .:susp: Is Crown Ok for their bearing & seal kit ? Thats what I used ~ 3 years ago , when I installed the LSD. No leaks @ the Flange , so far.
........ I've finally found them @ Jegs., But I'll call Dutchmans too, The Freight is gonna be the killer from Idaho

I'll check the flange run out this morning , before I do anything else, & Let Y'all know what I find.

I've always suspected that the PO dropped this 'Ol girl , REAL hard , at some point. It may be that now that I'm running her, every day, the 51 year old axles have had enough .

Thanks again. You'se guys are good Friends

If you find you need new axles anyway, I would consider the full float conversion, the cost probably not much more anyway if you need new bearings/seals too. Much stronger, simpler to install and service when needed. norcal69 has a write-up in his common sense build with the details of what you need. and where to get it.
Also, If you decide you want flanged axles, I would search for used ones, likely could find them, axles for a centered dana 44 are much common than flanged offset axles are. maybe even find a complete dana 44 axle assy and just swap it out cheaper than buying 2 new axles for yours. If you find bend damage on your axles I would check closely for housing damage too.

It hardly seems woth the effort to go full float if it's mostly a street Jeep with flanged axles already.

I have to agree with Fireball. The available flanged axles are a cheap fix for the intermediate. Just buy a third for a spare. I'm drooling over those two links...too bad same thing not available for the offset models.
I've had a full float conversion on my shelf for 10 years now...don't think I'll ever convert.

Well........Yes, I did, but I did stay at a Holiday I..... Oh , um,....Er, wait a minute here. ( I've lighted it up a wee bit lately & Got coil over shocks & helper leaves back there , too :))

    An AnyHoo Update Here :

Ma did always said I was her WorryWart  KEEP it SIMPLE , STUPID applies here. Checking the Flange's & attempting to send Y'all a video , I thought to check the torque on the axle Bearing plate & what do ya know .......all 12 were loose .
Moses Luddel's book says they should be 40 ft / #'s with Loctite  They are now....... & a lot less ' Wobble ' :bananatool: . Thank God , you all , & everything in the Universe, + the Lift too. (y) These Intermediate axles were a fairly basic system , Eh ? Another hour messin' with other things & then It's ' Let's GO Ranger's " Time . 3: 00 PM matinee on the Flyer's Ice.

Oh Yeah...... These '75 axle's are difficult to locate , aftermarket , & Very expensive when you factor in everything that you need to R & R 'em :(

Good news! easy fix.:bananatool:. I kinda wonder why the bolts worked loose? Never seen that before. If any bearing noise I think would pull out the axles and inspect the bearings and inner seals. If they were run loose they might be worn funny or damaged. you Don't want to risk losing a wheel at speed.

Yes Sir . I'm Running the OEM , finned 11' drums .....that were powder coated back in '92 . Had them resurfaced , back when I did the LSD install . I recall that the fella said they machined well.....But they were quite old ? ( Yep... ~ 48 years old :) ) They still look great...... but I'll pick up some new drums tomorrow. I'm sorta , kinda pray'n that those old drums & weights , that looked a bit wobbly, could have been the cause  . When I had her up on the Lift & in gear @ warm idle , I inscribed a line around each shaft , behind the hub. That showed me that the PS was almost spot on round & the DS was out of round perhaps 1/16" ? My BIL said it was the PS that he saw wobbling ? I'm certainly no machinist here , by any means . I often use the tools & tricks available to me. Also , I listened , with a stethoscope , & did not hear anything unusual. They are tight, side to side , with just a slight bit of outward play. Should be ok for the occasional 70 MPH that I get up to. Any Hoo...... When I pull them out, I'm gonna try to find a local machine shop & see if they will true them up a tad . We will see the cost comparison after that . :waiting:

I'm glad you figured it out! I was looking at the original axles for my '74. They have been standing in the corner for the last 20 years since I went full floater. I was considering offering them to you for cheap, but the shipping would have probably killed the deal. Now they stay were they stand!

I was thinking $150 for the pair before shipping. I have been holding on to them in case I decided to go back to original. My full floater is the a Warn kit no longer supported for spare parts. The thought that you could use those axles was an add on my side!

Thanks again , Y'all .....I did some stuff to her this weekend :) She's goin' back up on the Lift a little later this morning. Found a Local machine shop fella that will true up my existing axles for a VERY reasonable amount of $'s

Did I mention , lately, how thankful we are in our move to NC of last year. It's so refreshing to be in an Old School , hands on , & Tradesman type area again. :bananatool:
