First real question here. I got my M38A1 last Sunday. Been driving it a little each day. Up until today I could shift it into any 2 or 4 and hi or low combination. Now I can't shift it into 2WD low. Still can get 4WD low and both 2 and 4 in high. Any suggetions? I tired going forward, reverse, different combos, and nothing.

    Thanks

2WD low is locked out unless someone has modified your transfer case and removed the interlock "pill". You sure you were in 2 Low?

Geez, I'm pretty darn sure? But like I said I've only had it since Sunday. I guess there is really no huge need for 2wd low but I really thought I had it before?

I was just asking. If it won't go easily and everything else does and works, I suspect you didn't have it. ;)

sparky do you think it could be the interlock pill wasn't moving back until he drove it a few times and shifted the xfer back and forth? then the use loosened it and it freed itself with the extra use and is now doing its job.

    just a thought

the problem with 2wd lowrange is that all that nice torque runs through only one drive shaft and one axle instead of being divided between front and rear. that's a lot of stress on just one axle.

i thought it would be nice to have 2wd low range when i had my 47 2a in the late 60's and was going to remove the pill until i realized that if i'm in a situation that requires lowrange i'm usually already in 4wd high range by then.

btw enjoy the new m a! the pics on the garage thread look nice.

Zed, if Kevin actually had 2L for a short time and doesn't now, your analysis is probably correct.
Kevin, if 2L is important to you, such as if you will be running a front locker, then removing the interlock pill will allow 2L as needed. Just keep in mind the cautionary statements above...

Could you just try driving it in reverse in 4H, stop, go to neutral and then try 4low?

It is a muddin' thing when things get sticky, shake 'em. Try jiggeling the steering wheel too.
