I was out perusing a club member's junk yard- excuse me, I mean, Very Important and Culturally Significant Collection of Early American Utility and Military Vehicles. Ran across a 3B that has just been pounded. Looks like it was Rubiconed for about 40 years. Had a beer with the old guy, and talked about the old days.

It was kind of cool, F head, T90, PTO, winch was loose in the bed , roll cage, a ton of rock rash. I was trying to do the math in my head if it was worth dragging home. Then I noticed it.

A real live ventilating windhsield in the wild. I don't run into these very often.

Crank out windshields are rare?

 

Yes, on a CJ, I think so, I've never seen one in person. I think they were on a lot of military 3B's (the M606), and export models. Peter Debella used to sell them, but I think he is down to just parts. I remember a complete assembly being like $700 in 80's dollars. I'm trying to see if I could make it work with what I already have, maybe this frame on the jeep, and some parts I would still need to find. I am leaning against buying the complete jeep. It doesn't roll without some work, and I don't think I could get my money out of it. The WS frame is rotted in a few places, so I am exploring my options. Fun to think about though.

I call these the 3-ring hub. I'm sure they have a model number, but I couldn't find a number on them, usually on the dial. Also, Torque King has rebuild kits for them, if you need parts.

 

I currently have them in my cart on the Torque King site haha.

This is the reason I've always been intrigued by a ventilating windshield.

Obviously not my jeep, but they do look cool, and I have various forms of them on other vehicles I own, the WC and the M37. I just have never had the opportunity to get one in my price range. I started looking at what it would take, found this exploded parts view. There is a lot to it, and I have some of it, and I think the rest is obtainable.

The biggest obstacle is, on the parts jeep, the outer frame is pretty rotten.

 

Thanks for that, I can't read that enough times. So mine must be WL-2, because they don't have the raised number in the dial.

 

I think that inner frame is the biggest piece of the puzzle that can't be replicated. I'm not the guy to do it myself, but I'm waiting for someone to recreate it so we can all have ventilating windshields

 

I've always wanted a ventilating windshield for the winter time while I'm running the hardtop. The added breeze would be nice when you're going slow in the deep stuff

 

Absolutely. Here is my M37 with the windshield up, defroster doesn't work too well. Actually, don't even have one.

 

Was not able to come to terms on the 3B, but the windshield did follow me home today.

Finally had a chance to really look it over, it's rough in a few places.

Rot in the inner frame. This is a problem.

 

That looks very doable.

 

This is far as I could get it to open, so I soaked the hinges in Kroil. I sort of wanted to see what it looks like fully open.

Problem number 4. Water in the right tube froze and rounded the rectangle.

With most of the problems in the outer frame, and now that I know the outer frame is the same as a non-ventilating windshield, after comparing to mine, I am thinking about not using the rusty outer. The various brackets look removable.

The latch bracket spot welds could be drilled.

The upper hinges could be removed pretty easily.

Tomorrow, I'll get the jeep out and see if I can mock it up.
