Trying to figure out what this is and why it nay be there. Seems almost like a bimetal thermostat. Had a thermostat in the normal spot so not so sure what it is or why it might have been put there. No wires or anything going to it but a metal strip if you lift the flap.

    It's a 120v coolant heater.
They fail and it's best to leave them in place untill you break down and get a new one.

Thanks that explains it. Couldn't figure out why it had a ul listing on it. Now deleted with a new radiator and new hoses

Man - in the cold, those are awsome. Had one in my '49 going to high school plugged into a timer. Even at -40 she would fire right up. Driving - that was the issue. Everything else was so stiff it was like having the emergency brake on - push in the clutch and it would stop - no brakes needed  Slow ride to school, but it beat walking in those temps.

I am sure they are in -40 degrees but my heat pump for the garage arrived today so she will live in the lap of 46 degrees all winter long.

No kidding. I ride around all winter long with just a bikini top. But man, I'm sure paying out the nose for that luxury in taxes. I gotta get out of Commiefornia asap!

I have changed a lot of those over the years, they work pretty good but if the operator or driver doesn't unplug it before starting the engine the ice cold water in the rest of the system comes around and blows the hot element after a few starts I use the magnetic ones now on the pan and pop em off in the spring. I have a block heater in my Service truck, it sure is nice having heat as soon as you get in during Winter !

When I lived in Colder Climbs I left the truck running all day 'cause if you shut it off for 5 minutes it wasn't going to start again :(

At night I had the block heater & a battery blanket, that thing started like it was the middle of summer :)

I still remember my first NH winter with my beat-up (and top-less) '56. Cans of Sterno under the pan and starter.
