The upper bearing assembly is a light press fit into the top end of the outer column tube.
The column itself goes up through the bearing assembly.
Next comes the spring seat followed by the spring.
Then the steering wheel secured with an internal lock washer and nut.

I see, so the 10.344 shown as separate pieces is the bearing(?) I can now understand how the spring will keep the wheel from sliding down the outer shaft. Someone had this apart and didn't replace the bearing.

Yes the 4 various components of 10.344 make up the bearing assembly. The bearing is only sold as a complete assembly. The assembly is part #801422.

Hello, Timgr. I'm new to the blog. I've been working on a nut/bolt restoration of a 1974 Jeep CJ5 AMC 304 and am on the tail end of the completion but have run into an issue. Of course, the Jeep came with a hackjob steering column so I had planned to replace/rebuild it all to factory. What I didn't know is how difficult it was going to be to find parts for the '74. I was able to get the replacement column tube with upper/lower bushings, as well as the steering shaft, but I can't find any of the upper components. Do you have a parts breakdown to the exploded column diagram you posted?

This TSM has similar diagram with parts descriptions instead of part numbers. Also has additional info that might help if you don't already have it.

Thank you, Doug! Steering column is the last thing that needs to be assembled through the firewall before we can move onto electrical. Once electrical is done, the Jeep is done...
