I need to paint the front fenders on my '67, after fixing some old Rubicon rash and some rust in the double panel area.
The last time I needed a stock jeep color, I went to an automotive paint supplier in Carson City, showed them the stock jeep paint chip, (in this case 332 Indian Ceramic), they looked it up, got the recipe, mixed it up, and walked out with some nice acrylic urethane single stage.
Wow, times have changed. My experience today at the same supplier was terrible. First they shot a photo of the sample I brought in (tailgate)-no matches. Next, they Googled the paint code-nothing. Next they fumbled through some old books, nothing. They literally can't match it, they admit, no one knows how to do it. They eventually called PPG for an updated code based on the old PPG 332 code and mixed up a sample. With a drop on the tailgate close enough (I thought), I had them make a quart. Got it home and looked closer, it's not even close. $130 bucks later.

I obviously can't go back to these guys. If the computer doesn't tell them what to mix, or it's not in the system, they don't know what to do. Look for a body shop that can match single stage paint? Does that exist? Anyway, I appreciate the knowlege base here, and I'm apparently about 30 years behind the times (on paint), so looking for advice or recommendations in the N. Cal or Western NV area.

Did you try Kaiserwillies? kaiserwillys.com. I haven't used them for paint but they have a lot of orig colors in the catalog. I agree, paint is way different than it was last time I was doing body work.....has it been 30 years......omg it has.

I have not thought about KW, but I'm gun shy about the mail order part of it.

Take the paint back and have them adjust the recipe. It may have been wrong the first time. Do you have the
original can as it will have the mix?

With the old bodyshop we used to have locally, the old owner showed me how to adjust colors, trial-and-error. I got so good at it, he used to call me to come up and work with him on some mixes (his eyes were getting bad from age). Most paint stores have someone that can do this. It looks like you need to add some white and maybe a drop or two of yellow to what you have. Just do a little at a time, and shake it up well as you add the tinting color. That new can you have can be tinted a lot closer.

the aged paint will have faded some and further complicates things. looks like a smidge more white might help

I don't have the original can, it's been a long time. I think I will go back. They need to do better. Unfortunately, I was trying to squeeze this in between jeep trips, so it will have to wait a few weeks.

Thank you for that tip, it may come to that. I need to visit some Northern CA friends anyway, gives me a good reason to go if the first shop can't make it better.

It is mostly red, blue and green to get that color.

Hard to match on a photo, I'd take the tailgate itself & let them match with the colour computer camera thingy.

It's been called worse. But it's a family site so we won't go there.

Update to this. I basically waited winter out, but then had to decide my next move. I called several Martin Auto Color stores, (the one in Carson City was the one I had trouble with). They all said they have a company policy that they won't even try to color match. It's by the code, or nothing. So, I took @jeep peep69 advice and called Paint Mart in Redding, Ca. Sent them the code and a photo of the chip, they said no problem. Since this is a good 4 hour drive, I needed to not only get away from work for a day, I needed them to get it done same day. I also combined it with a visit to a friend nearby. Got there at 9, they called at 11 and said come get it. They showed me the sample on the tailgate, and I could not see it, so that's good. For this photo, I circled it. I guess they know what they're doing.

This is the Nason line, which is the cheaper Dupont single stage urethane. I am looking forward to trying it on the fender. Anyway, I came away from the Redding Paint Mart with a renewed faith that those we rely on for the future of our hobby do still exist.

Any decent paint shop can custom-match. Usually, they like to have a couple days to work on these in the slow hours.
Glad you got this done as close as it looks. Nason is decent paint, especially of its catylized.

The guy at Paint Mart said he thinks it's due to loss of knowledgable employees, (you know, the old guys that know how to do it), and some stores aren't training the new employees to have that skill, just to follow the code.

Good people at that shop. They just suffered a devastating fire a year ago and are working out of a temporary store till their new store gets built. Glad they were able to help you.
