I have an original speedo for my 65 CJ5, the speedo face is in good condition but the internals are all rusted, corroded and in bad shape. I was wondering if anyone has put the face from an original speedo on a reproduction speedometer unit?

    Following!
Removing those 2 little rivets carefully and then reattaching would be the hard part. I also wonder how the sweep for the 0-9 would be?

I think the sweep would be pretty close. I haven't purchased a reproduction yet to verify. I was hoping that someone else had tried it already.

Can you remove the needle from the mechanism?

The reproduction speedometers imported by Omix-ADA have mixed reviews, many reporting that they don't work very long.

I bought one and it looks cheap. I would rather put the Omix-ADA face on a working original speedo! I'm still trying to figure out how to lay out my dash, and the only reason I was the Omix-ADA one was to keep it more stock looking. PO had a Stewart Warner speedo that looked really nice, but having the all-in-one eliminates a lot of dashboard clutter.

They aren't cheap but Speedhut makes bolt-in customizable Speedometers for old Jeeps: https://speedhut.com/gauge-applicat...-with-tachometer-speedo-fuel-level-temp-tach/

    I did:bananatool:
In my case I had 2 older speedometers. One worked with a different face. Drilled out the rivits and I drilled the center hole out. Might have been 3/4"?
It was just big enough to be able to slip on with the needle in place. Just got some black painted rivite and popped it back on.

I cut/bent the needle on the donor and cut the face off the speedometer I wanted. Made 2 cuts to the center so I didn't damage the needle any

Now if we could just get GPS to send fuel level too. That would be cool.

I purchased an Omix/Crown only to throw it in the scrap bin. I broke down and purchased SpeedHut gauges that was 13 years ago. Great product and support.

The omix gauges used to be built like the original ones. Antiquated design and prone to fail. Now the temp and fuel have been updated to modern standards. I havnt put mine to the test yet but hopfully better.

To remove the needle I use a fork and lift evenly. It pops off suddenly

If your lucky, it will pop off. I’ve also pulled the shaft out with the needle.

I love the idea of taking something original and putting new/more reliable parts behind it. I went a slightly different route in my build.

I went with Dakota Digital (DAK-VHX55J-S-B). I ordered mine from Summit along with a n electric speedo cable extension. Looks pretty original, but has a bunch of extra options, to include TAC, integrated fuel gauge, and then separate oil and temp gauges. I had to drill holes for the extra gauges.

Not that I have it, but entire unit comes with the option for the GPS speedo as well.

Hahaha, probably more suited for those doing V8 swaps. But, referencing the above conversation, this setup provides the TAC and GPS speedo option if you are looking to eliminate the speedo cable entirely. I opted for the electric speedo cable that screws right into the original fitting on the D18, but does require and 10” extension cable/adapter. But be warned if you forget to order them together…
