    1978 CJ5 w/1980/258 1bbl carter carb.
Rebuilt carb a 1000 miles ago along with new plugs, wires, rotor, cap, coil, control module, fuel filters, gas tank, just name the relevant things oh and I run ethanol free gas only. I had just finished work on new clutch. Rebuilt T18 trans, and Dana 20 transfer case. Didn’t touch any other areas on the engine. Just a little history ‍♂️oh timing set at 6 before TDC
Took it out for a drive with the wife, the Jeep stalled a bit but got us to our destination. Because of the stall out I decided to travel back on a back road, after going a short ways it stalled and then backfired like someone shot a gun inside the Jeep and glowed like Fourth of July . I sat for a couple minutes, started it back up drove quarter mile back from where we came it backfired again with same impact . I waited for my friend to tow me back to his house.
Muffler blew completely out. Do you have any ideas what might cause this? ‍♂️ The Jeep was running fine before I did the clutch/trans work. Sorry for rambling!

Just checking, because if it was after TDC it could be related to your symptoms.

Some sort of electrical problem, for some reason the engine stops firing while turning, allowing the exhaust to fill up with unburned gasoline/fumes/or vapor. Then the electrical failure corrects it's self monetarily and ignites the unburned fuel in the exhaust system, bang. Kinda like when you turn off your key and back on going down a hill and makes your vehicle back fire. Quite likely a loose wire connection in your circuit that is feeding from the battery to your coil. Look for anything that might stop the ignition from firing. Any chance that water might have gotten inside the dist cap, like did you pressure wash the motor? Just speculating.

Yes, it was the ECM. Just for shi… and giggles I went to NAPA and picked one up. I haven’t driven a lot yet but so far so good. What threw me was that I hadn’t done anything that made sense that I could have screwed up. o_O I had replaced EMC only 1000 miles ago. I guess the moral of the story is keep a spare at all times. Thanks for offering
