    Hey everybody,
After selling my Cherokee and decided to purchase a '73 CJ-5. After a starter and a battery everything seems to run great considering its age. However, i have recently noticed that the clutch pedal and process of shifting gears has been very tempermental and the Jeep likes to hop a lot, like when the clutch is let out too fast or something like that. Is this normal for a Jeep of this year? Is this something that i will eventually have to get used to or is there an adjustment or replacement i can make?

    Thanks :?

Mine is just like that. Make sure the transmission torque arm is in good shape. It makes it fun to watch other people drive it too. :D

Probably worn clutch linkage components. New replacements are available, as are other linkage options.

Don't underestimate having the clutch adjusted for your leg length and shifting style. It is easily done and if you set it right it will practically drive itself. I like mine to grab closer to the floor myself, because I have long legs.

Also, adhere to the shift pattern. If you try to go from 1st to 2nd gear diagonally (assuming it is a 3 spd) you will probably run into fussiness from the Jeep. Make sure you are going up and over and up like the pattern is laid out. I hope this makes sense for you.

Yup, it is easy to do. I was doing the same thing until my Dad pointed it out to me. Easy to overlook but I found it does make a difference. ;)

Yeah, the Borg-Warner 3-speeds do not like to be shifted fast. I always have to remind myself of the wide gate when I drive the truck, otherwise I clip reverse.

Also, you don't need to wind it out. Low speed shifts are fine - almost any speed rolling forward can go into 2nd, and you can shift into 3rd at about 20 mph, maybe slower. You're hardly ever in 1st - almost always only from a standing start. After a while, you learn to match the shift speeds to the gear change, and you can shift into the next gear without a clutch (almost).
