Thanks for taking time to read this.

I want to drain and refill the diffs on this barn find, there were more than one kind of Differential in 1970?

Any info on identifying what Diffs I have so I can order the correct gasket would be much appreciated! RearDiffcover.jpeg FrontDiffcover.jpeg

I’ve become a fan of the Lube Locker diff cover gaskets, they are reusable. They are expensive, in the $20 range, but work really well and I’ve had at least one of the covers off several times with good sealing each time. I got tired of prying off covers that were RTV’d on and spending the time getting off all the old stuff. If I recall correctly, the Dana 25, 27, and 30 all use the same gasket. Just another option.

That metal tag hanging under a bolt in the lower photo should have specs about whats inside your diff, like the ratio.

That tag on mine just says to use the proper lube. Doesn’t indicate the ratio. :(

If it states to “use limited slip diff lube only” then your D27 has a factory installed Powr Lok.
If your jeep is a v6 then having Powr Lok suggests the gears are likely to be 4.88 ratio.

Take Wire wheel on a cordless drill to that tag! You can read it plain as day. I'm curious now!

I see a harmonic balancer behind that crankshaft pulley, so probably a 6 cylinder.

Oh now I see what your saying Andy.
The axles are still under the actual Jeep.
Looks like both axles have tags on them.
That later style of tag typically has the actual Jeep part numbers deep stamped into them.
With those numbers you can positively identify what they were from the factory.

At first I couldn't see the crusted up tag on the rear but you are right. These are usually missing on the Jeep axles that come my way.

And yeah, skip the gasket.. RTV done correctly will do the trick.. I put on a nice even film about 1/16" thick, stick it on the diff with the bolts just to hold it in place. Just finger tight on the bolts to get the RTV to touch and squish just a bit. Stop there let it sit and let the RTV cure for a few hours and "Form-A-Gasket", then tighten bolts and viola..

I use the Lube Locker gaskets. Makes it easy to check things out after I've been in deep water.
