I bought a 1957 CJ6 on Sunday. I think it was a Forest Service Jeep. Under the hood is dark green, but the outside is the lighter green. The light green looks old enough to be original when new. Last tagged in 1996 and likely sitting since. Has the 4 cyl under hood, and everything looks stock except for the electric fuel pump.
Looking it over, it has some accessories that don't look factory. The passenger grab bar doesn't allow enough clearance for the windshield latch, so it was removed. Sweet ashtray in dash. Weird shift knob. I couldn't get my crappy camera to get a good pic of heater behind glovebox. Glovebox liner gone. Can I assume someone had fun with a JC Whitney catalog?
The things I figure factory are the hooks bolted to tailgate and some on back of bulkhead. The Jeep has the pipe mounts behind the seats and on back corners for factory soft top. My '68 CJ5 has holes in tailgate, but had snaps for I'm guessing aftermarket top? Were those holes always drilled?

The tailgate holes weren't always drilled but were knock outs and needed removed for early soft tops.

Looks like a lot of work but still a good find

The grab bar, ashtray, and shift knob are certainly not stock. The "hooks" you mention are called "Footman Loops" and they are indeed stock.

Otherwise it looks original and in very nice shape for its age.

The bar and shift knobs are bound for removal. Ashtray doesn't bother me. Besides, I don't care to patch the hole. Most of the body work won't be too hard. Just the passenger rear is nasty.

Could I trouble you to tell me the measurement of the cj6 pipe mounts from front to rear center to center? I’ve searched and can’t find it anywhere. Thanks

The Jeep looks pretty good overall. Some dents, couple cracks in fenders, couple rough welds, and only 2 rust spots. I expect underneath to be rust free. Seats faired the worst. Should have it running this weekend.
There is a block off plate where the mechanical goes. The electric pump looks like it was put on 30 years ago. I haven't had time to do anything but get it in the garage and look it over. I'm trying to do the work of 3 people at my job. Not much energy left. Maybe another beverage will get me going. I'll get the mount measurements tonight or tomorrow.

Only worked a 10 today, so went out to garage. Neighbor came over to check out the Jeep and tell me stories of his Jeeps. He has a sidexside now, so I couldn't talk him into buying this one. After he left, I did some cleaning. Then I remembered that I was supposed to have a tape measure in hand. It looks like for the hole centers: 57" side to side, and 50" front to back. Just like the fronts, the rears are 4" tall. The top is even with the outside body line. The rear hole center to end of body at tailgate is 10" or a 16th less. Hope this helps and excuse the poor photos. Now back to garage. SUNP0214.JPG SUNP0216.JPG SUNP0219.JPG SUNP0220.JPG

I got this Jeep from a customer. I deliver propane. While I was filling his tank, I asked him what year his was. I was not looking to buy it, but he offered me a good deal. I've never owned a Jeep until I got my V6 CJ5 in June. I always thought the perfect Jeep was one with the V6. This CJ6 is cool. I want to get it running and see how it drives compared to the 5. This is probably my only chance to play with a 6. You haven't seen my collection of projects. Over 20 of various makes. Unless I get a new job, I'll be working 70-80 hrs a week til June. I can't justify 2 Jeeps. Don't worry, I'll post it here first.

Thanks, looks like I have the early top bow support structure for a CJ6 soft top. The PO had it in the '57 cj5 parts jeep I picked up, I think he was gonna cut it down to fit the 5, glad he didn't! Maybe it'll get into the ad section someday.
