i just installed a painless wireing kit on my 73 cj...it starts and runs good however, it doesnt shut off right a way when i turn the switch off. i know its not a timing thing...it is deffinately an electrical prob...i am not sure what it could be, any ideas?

You might need a diode in the wire from the #1 terminal on the alternator. It can continue to feed power to the ignition.

which is the #1 wire... is it the regulator exciter wire??

i took my time on it, only working a little each day, but i would say you could do it over a weekend.

You've got something back-feeding to the coil when the ignition switch is off. I'd suggets using a test lamp and verifying that there is 12v to the (+) side of the coil with the ignition off, and start removing one wire at a time from the coil and tracing it back until you find the source. Frequently you will find a wire in the charging circuit will provide the back-feed, but you will need to work wire by wire to find it.

If it a Delco alternator, looking from the back it will be the terminal on the left. This wire runs usually from the alternator through the dash light to the ignition switch.
