I looked online and found no easy source for the steel caps. My parts book shows a 60s-era part number that I searched for - they may be widely available under an earlier part number. Check Walck's. When we installed locking hubs at the Jeep dealership, we'd put the flanges and caps in the locking hub box and leave them in the Jeep for the owner. I'd guess 90% of them were thrown away.

Me too - I would just yield to the popular tide and install locking hubs. Except for the restored M38A1s, Jeep with flanges is quite unusual these days. Most owners assume you need locking hubs - you don't - but they are a nice accessory and easy to install.

    To all,

Thanks for the information. I feel this rig has sat for awhile. The seller did do an oil and filter change, so that is good. Right now, I want to go pull the hubs, check the brakes, replace the front hub seals, clean, inspect the front wheel bearings etal. If all is good, pack the wheel bearing, put in new hub seal, adjust and go for a putt. The gear boxes, front and rear axle boxes were all full, but I plan on draining them and put in new 90 wt.
Then next will be the dreaded sparky ohm bug electrical system. That is when the fun will probably begin. Printed a wiring diagram off the net, so I will have a reference to compare with what should be there as opposed the reality of what is really there and the "improvements" made by the previous original owners.
Thanks for the help and I hope ya'll have a wonderful weekend.
Now back to our regularly scheduled honey do weekend projects.

    Tim,

I got the correct metal caps less the Olive Drab paint from G503. They fit perfectly on the hub flange.
Pulled the front drums yesterday afternoon. The "grease" was almost like runny pudding. The bearings looked good but will need front brake shoes maybe. Today is dedicated to my immediate supervisor, so probably no updates for awhile for partial completion of the honey do list.

Might look at the spindle bushings. If they are worn/damaged/missing and the knuckle is full of 90WT, the oil can migrate into the hub while the axle is turning, diluting the grease and causing it to turn into "knuckle pudding". This is especially true for Jeeps with drive flanges, as the axles are turning all the time.

Sounds like you're making good progress. This looks like a great Jeep you'll have lots of good times with. Almost all these old Jeeps need some work on the steering system so, if you haven't already done so, do a complete check and repair of the steering before you start driving it around. Death wobble, or worse, is no fun. I'd probably do that before I worked on the electrical.
