    Hi,

I recently purchased a 1965 CJ 5 with the F Head engine. The jeep appears to be in pretty good shape and has not been used for a while. The odometer indicates a wee bit less than 42,000 miles. The tube type tires 700/15 Goodyears Mud and Snow are showing their age. Is there any tire that is currently produced that has a similar type of tread design?

Don't know the procedure to post photos.

Thank you in advance for any assistance in this,

    Zootin

Greetings from Idaho. Nice looking CJ5! Awesome color . I just put these STA Super Traxion 7:00 - 15 tires on our 1970 CJ5 Dauntless. I run them with about 20 pounds of air pressure. Jack

    To all,

Thanks for the warm welcome. The jeep was from Cali, drove down and picked it up and headed back to Southern Oregon as fast as I could.
Got to play around with it yesterday after my honey do stuff was done. Here is a photo of what she looks like now.

One question I have is the cap on the front hub appears to be made of rubber of some type. It is the same on both side of the front axle. I was under the impression this cap was made of metal. But then again, I think I may have been mistaken before maybe.
Thanks to all for the warm welcome,

The "cap" should be a drive flange made of steel since it doesn't have locking hubs.

The front hubs are interesting. They don't look like normal drive flanges. Can you provide better pictures of them?

There is supposed to be a drive flange on each hub.

These should also have a stamped steel dust cap, that is a press fit over the raised part of the flange. A snap ring goes on the protruding end of the axle shaft, but it's not essential.

If you fit locking hubs (ie Warn hubs) the flanges and caps are replaced by the locking hubs.

    To all,
Have been away today. It is my immediate supervisor's special day. I took her out to eat at her favorite restaurant.
Will be back in the shop tomorrow and get some pics of the item in question.
    Thx,
    Zootin

I have seen rubber dust caps used on front drive flanges. Yes, usually, drive flanges have a metal dust cap like used on the 2-piece rear axle nut. The rubber caps are about the same dimension as the metal caps, and have been “borrowed” from Land Rovers where they serve the same function.

    Donny,
Thanks for the reply. I got some metal caps, spark plugs, points and condenser today. Nice to know that it may have been used previously. However, who knows how long they "rubber caps" had been on the jeep. They were originally black and painted when the body etal was repainted in yellow.
    Thx,

That's cool, without the metal cap it certainly looks different.

Many riding mowers use as rubber/plastic cap that stretches over a washer to seal the front and rear C clips. Might be an option.
Have you thought about moving to a set of locking hubs? Simple to install and will help reduce wear on the front end as well as upping the fuel economy a touch. They can be had used and if in good shape will last for as long as you won the rig.
