I have a couple questions about my 72 renegade, It is all original from what I can tell, it has a 304, pwr steering, original orange paint with decals...Kinda faded, good running condition.
I was wondering if it would be a bad idea to take the smog components off of the engine? I would like to keep this jeep as stock as possible as far as the way it looks, but make it a reliable driver.
Also the previous owner gave me a set of leaf springs that are an after market 5 pack spring to replace the exhisting ones which are a 10 pack, would this smooth out the ride much? and would changing them benefit the trails? I don't know if I should put them on or not.
I will post some pics of it online soon for yall to see. any response appreciated. thanks, Taylor

    Welcome aboard!
As for the 5 leaf packs, what can you tell us about them? What brand? Are they lift springs? 2.5" or 4" lift? (If you aren't sure, you may be able to take some ID off the springs, call the Mfgr and find out)

Generally, replacement springs will ride better than the stock 10-leaf packs... but different brands are softer or stiffer relatively. An important factor in the ride is the type of shocks you use. I recommend Rancho 9000 series, adjustabl;e shocks. You can tune the ride to your driving conditions. Of course, before you buy shocks, you have to determine if you are dealing with stock height springs or lift springs, and if so which lift.

    HTH!! :)

Welcome from Eastern Washinton, My 75 has the five pack leaf springs also. Does ride pretty good (for a jeep). Not a lift set. Don't have anymore info on them as they were put on by PO.

    welcome form So Cal
I would leave the air pump and related components on, as long as they are functioning.
No real advantage to removing them; won't make the 304 any more power or give it more reliabliltiy
if you do remove, don't toss 'em out, hang onto them; in this state, who knows what will be reinstated!

    welcome from Ohio!

I would try the 5 leaf packs....if you don't like them you could always put the 10 leafs back on.

Like to see some pics when you get a chance....

I just posted some pictures of my renegade on photobucket, i hope the link works, I'm somewhat new to message boards.
Does anyone know where I can find a good shop/owners manual with wire diagrams in it?
I need a new ignition switch and havent been able to find one yet. where's a good place to buy used parts?
Are the decals available anywhere that are on the hood and the bull on the side?

    http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y242/taylormayde/72 Renegade/shackles.jpg

I was unable to find any numbers or brand name on the springs but I will definetly install them anyway, they seem fairly new.

There is a link to a place for the renegade decals but I can't find it. I will look for it. As for the Bull.....I am not familiar with it....maybe a local sign shop can make you one.

Nice looking Renegade. Thanks for the pic

    Welcome from Boston!

I would keep your original paint and decals if you can. It's not clear that you'll be increasing the value of the Jeep by replacing them ... original paint is a desirable thing.

Re the smog stuff, if it were mine, I'd keep it all until it fails. I would repair the vapor recovery system if it fails, since it vents your fuel tank and doesn't cost you anything in prefornamce and maintentance. The air injection is a maintenance headache generally, and you might remove it if it breaks. It is a small parasitic load; realize that if you remove a functioning air pump and store it, it will freeze up and you won't be able to reinstall it. The air distribution manifolds are pretty much impossible to remove without destroying them...

I don't recall exactly what equipment a CA '72 will have, but I think you will also have PCV, an EGR system, transmission controlled spark, and a vacuum advance CTO (coolant temperatur override switch). The EGR has a 2-port CTO and an EGR valve. You shouldn't remove the EGR without changing the air-fuel mixture. The recycled exhaust gas cools combustion, so if you remove it you will be too lean. You can remove the EGR and rejet if you want to. An Edelbrock Performer manifold and the 470 CFM Holley Truck Avenger might be a good combo if you want to upgrade.

Re the shop manual, there's a '72 manual online at www.c104.net ... you can buy a reprint manual at www.thejeep.net or you can sometimes find one at www.books4cars.com or on ebay.

IIRC the stock Renegade springs have 10 leaves. This is the same as the "heavy duty springs and shocks" option. Standard springs had 5 leaves. If you don't like the ride, I'd suggest some nice, soft tires - check the load range on your current tires and lower the pressure.

Just another comment - with a steel top, I would not switch to the standard 5-leaf springs. The steel top was available both from the factory and as a dealer-installed item. Jeep would not sell the factory hard top without the HD (10-leaf) suspension. This restriction likely depended on the lower max GVW with the std springs, but it will also affect body roll.

Not wanting to be a killjoy, but if your Jeep were mine, and I lived in Sacramento, I'd ditch that steel top ASAP. Driving with the top off is a real joy, and the balance of your Jeep is changed a lot by removing all that steel way up high on the body. The steel top can be practical for a plow truck in the snow belt, but in CA, you should have a soft top. JMO.

If you didn't know, one of the largest Jeep-only yards is in Antelope. J&W. Spensive though.

I couldn't agree with you more, I am taking the top off today, I took the doors off yesterday just waiting for saturday to come! can't wait.
Thanks for the referral to the yard in antelope, I'll check them out.
Couple other questions...I have a manual pump for the windsheild washer fluid but there is no knob on the dash, what did the knob or lever look like and are they possible to find?
Looks like ignition switches for these are hard to find.

Hey, that top looks like a Meyers Snow Plow Cab (angled windows are the key). Those do go for some $$$ if you put it on Ebay - and they do make a Jeep very top heavy. Mine drove like a different Jeep when I pulled the steel cab off.

AWESOME! Another Orange Renegade here. Man I am gonna DL some of your pics, mine was painted dark green when I got it , but originally it was orange like that. Chekc out my page I have done lots so far, if you have any questions, feel free to let em fly on here, these guys are a real help.

One question, I see a tank filler under the drivers seat. that was gone in '72? ..... I am pretty sure... guys? I see from the name of the pic it says spare, does it have a fuel switch like a duel tank P/U? quite an interesting option if factory, make it mucho more worth if factory.

I see the VIN, just like mine, same month of build in fact, just odd

Also, I think the windshield washer pump was a manual thingy located in the hole directly on top the steering column. this was answered for me by "what goes here?" question I posed a while back
