    Sorry, my bad.

Mixing up your posts with Tyler's. Threads are getting crossed up, you both talked about setting them at .020, not .016

So just a question, does it make a difference if I just turn the key to the on position (using a remote start) to check for spark in the wires or should I use the ignition to check for spark in the plugs?

Turn the key switch to on and use your remote start switch to turn engine over .make sure vehicle is in neutral . Good luck finding the problem.

A remote starter switch is cheap on Amazon or at your FLAPS. Also easy to make one from scrounged materials using some alligator clips, wire and a push button.

Don't stand in front of the Jeep when you crank it. And check that it's in neutral. And set the parking brake. Defense in depth.

So just an update, I got anew rotor and changed out the distributor cap. Still no spark to the plug wires. I jumped a wire from the battier to the coil to see if there was something I missed in the wiring from ignition again nothing to the plugs. I’m at a loss so if anyone has any ideas please let me know?

I went out and I have good spark from the coil wire when I put a spark plug in the coil wire.

I did find out something that may be the problem. When changing out the points I may have lost the insulator piece that prevents the points spring (condenser and -coil wire) from grounding to the distributor plate? I will try to make something to try a little later today.

If so, how did you get the coil to spark...? If it was by cranking, the points are okay(ish).

Do you have a mechanically adept neighbor who could come over and take a look? This is very hard to follow over the interwebs. It might be something that a new set of eyes could see that you’ve been missing.

Ok so just an update, I received the new cap and rotor today, started with a new rotor no luck so I went with the rotor and cap still no luck. So a friend sent me YouTube video on how to check the coil. I tried an it was a real week spark and would not go to the plug. I went in and purchased a new coil and boom spark and it started up. I changed all the old parts out an started right up. Looks like it was the coil all along. I will still changed the points condenser rotor and cap just to be on the safe side. Man am I glad to get this figured out and moving on to changing a leaking water pump. LOL. Thanks to all for the help and suggestions thru this.

I once got a Dodge pickup real cheap because the owner couldn't get it to start. He was a little upset when I showed up with a new coil, installed it, and drove the truck home.

Nice, I was getting spark but not enough so $30 and I’m running again. I still plan to change out the old points, condenser, rotor and cap but now I know better how to troubleshoot an electrical issue. LOL
