depending on fab skills, could be fixed @ home, or sent out.

I'd clean it up with sandpaper/ emery cloth and see how it looks......

I'd have to sand for hours just to get rid of the pitting and remove a LOT of material. As for the gouge where the seal usually rides, it would have to be filled in with JB or some Mig. It's at least 1/32 deep if not 1/16. Anybody in MI got an extra D27? Maybe I should just price out a D30 with disk brakes and save myself a lot of trouble ...

*sigh* What a bummer to find on Sunday morning :(

Had heard a guy with a toyota had a similar problem. I guess he cleaned the surface real well and used jb weld type stuff and sanded it smooth.

Ditto. JB Weld it and sand smooth. Remember, the only thing that rides on there is the rubber seal and felt wiper, and the only movement is on steering. It's not like that is a high-speed bearing surface. Prime and paint with a quality rattle can and it should seal up just fine.

Guess I have nothing to lose ... I'll try it once it warms up a bit so the paint and other chemicals stick and cure properly.

    Thanks!

Went out in the garage and sanded it ... did I mention that there is an awful lot of material missing? I'd have to coat he entire backside with JB to get it out to where it was. I'd guess at least 1/32 down all the way around and 1/16 in the trench. Do they sell oversized seals for these?

I popped the bearing rides and confirmed that they are the culprit. The top was worse than the bottom. The top is heavily worn all the way around, while the bottom only has one bad spot where it appears chipped -- a triangle-shaped pit about 1/4" on one side.

You might want to repair the surfaces as best you can, put it together and run pudding and/or grease instead of oil.

"Rides" you mean races? Aren't those replaceable?

I'll try it if I can't find another axle at a reasonable price. It's a question of cost v.s. time spent and I'm guessing about 6 hours of work just on that knuckle to do a halfway decent job. It's that bad. The pictures I posted earlier don't show the difference between the inner and outer surfaces. I'll try to get some after work tonight.

Yeah, I meant races. Had a brain fart when I was typing that post and couldn't think of the proper name. I popped them out the other day and that's how I got to see how bad the bottom one was.

The bearings/races had to be bad enough for the knuckle to be metal-to-metal for years to take that much material all the way around. The bigger pits I can understand as normal vibration & bumps would help that along. If it was leaking for that long, I wonder if my gears are any good ... guess I'll pull that cover tonight, too.

knuckle oil only lubes bearings. oil in the diff does the gears. should have a seal to seperate the two.
