Switch Back To 2bl Carb?

    Recently picked up a 48 and it has a 231 Odd Fire buick. It currently has an Edelbrock 4bl carb and intake. The previous owner gave me a 2bl carb and intake. The Edelbrock has started giving me issues and I have been reading that the 2bl is better for these. Would it be worth it to rebuild the 2bl or just tune up the Edelbrock?

    I don’t know much about carbs but I would venture to tune up the 4 barrel before going back to the 2.

    Pretty sure the Edelbrock is a lot (too much) carburetor for a 231. I would keep the existing manifold and use a 2V adapter. My choice would be a Rochester 2V throttle body, but you could adapt to a Motorcraft 2V 2100 or 2150, or the original Rochester 2G-whatever. A Rochester DualJet is also said to work well.

    The Edelbrock is a Carter AFB clone and a miserable off road carb. Holley TA 470 or modded 390 are good on these. If otherwise a stock engine going back to the 2bbl with a Rochester 2G or Motorcraft 2100 is a good option.

    Yep!!! One of the small Holley TA's is about as good as it gets with a carb. I'm using an ancient 450 cfm 4150 from a Rambler 250 engine. I had extended bowl vents and spring loaded needles in it long before the debut of the TA's. Better throttle response and mileage compared to the Rochester 2G.

    Go back to the Rochester Two barrel.... The edelbrock is awful off road

    Thank you for the replies. I got the Edelbrock running a lil better, but we wheeled it a lil bit and it did not like inclines. Ill start looking for a rebuild kit for this one just in case it needs it. Thanks!

    I had one of those carbs on my blazer. It would flood out on washboards and tried to kill me on several occasions...

    As mentioned above in post#3, the Edelbrock/AFB is too large, cfm wise, for the 225/231 V6 engine. Though you may get it to run with that carb, it is a mis-match that will not perform satisfactorly. The venturies are too large to atomize the fuel correctly. A smaller venturi/throat will draw air through at a higher velocity, atomizing the fuel correctly, making the engine run much better. A Holley 390 (#8007) is small enough to atomize the fuel pretty well, and some folks have had luck with the TA470 Holley. An old Rochester 4 Jet from a Buick 215 works OK on the 225/231 V6, but they are hard to find, and are not very refined.
    You might try to find a 4bbl to 2bbl adapter and run a 2bbl carb. I'm assuming you have an aftermarket alloy 4bbl intake? They usually work quite well with the proper size carb.

    Thank you! I believe its an aftermarket intake. It says Offenhauser on the front of it.
