Or Im stuck on stupid. At any rate I have two questions- this may be elementary to the more knowledgeable members. I have a lot of play in my steering. I have adjusted the steering box and installed a tight steer. However much of the play remains at the drag link / bell crank area. I removed the drag link as I want to replace it and am wanting to order parts for the bell crank, but am stumped on it. All repair kits show bearings.

From what Ive gleaned on my service manual, searching the forums, and the web, these bell cranks are supposed to have bearings that ride on the pivot bolt. However when I disassembled it, there were no bearings. Just what appears to be a bronze bushing and the Pivot bolt. Even my service manual says it has two bearings, a spacer and seals which ride on the bolt.

And secondly- what's the best way to remove the bell crank from the tie rods? A puller?

I thank you all kindly for your thoughts.

So as I get ready to start looking at the steering, how do I tell how much is the Ross box vs the varions linkage?

Bronze bushings were an optional fix for shot needle bearings, I've heard from others on here that they don't last well. Finding a good quality repair kit for the bell crank is quite a challenge, the Omix ones are sloppy from the get-go. :( Also check the ball ends of the pitman and bellcrank- they do wear & it does make a difference.

As for finding the slop the easiest/bestest/fastest way is to have someone rock the steering wheel while you're underneath seeing what is or isn't moving.

Thanks for clarifying that. It explains the lack of bearings. I tightened up the drag link slotted head, and it seemed to improve a bit.

I also tried tightening the lock nut above the pivot shaft- but it was cracked so it doesn't stayed tight. Before it loosens itself as the steering wheel turns, the slop is greatly reduced. Might run to the fastener store tomorrow and see about finding a similar lock nut.

These were good kits if you can find one on fleabay or somewhere else:

Also, someone was/is? making a replacement bell crank that has tapered roller bearings. Member Garage Gnome may have one of these. But those are not cheap.
