I’ve been thinking that a pair of side-bars like this would sure give my ’57 CJ5 a more rugged look.

    http://www.quadratec.com/cgi-bin/sg...2&UREQC=3&UREQD=4&FNM=12&UID=2005031014574201

The description says these are for "76-86 CJ". Anybody know how much customizing I would have to do to make these work on my '57? If extensive modification is required, anybody know where I could find a similar product that would line up better?

Have you got a fab shop around you that you could stop in and tell them what you want? I think the ones you posted would be too long as is.

Glenn: There is a custom-welding shop in town. I'll stop in and check. I just figured they'd charge an arm-and-a-leg compared to a kit - and might be easier with a kit. There's nothing like that that will fit a '57?

    Thanks,
    Brian

What about Firegod? Isn't he making stuff like that for CJ-5s?

Chances are you won't find a "kit" for your CJ-5 halon.

    Local is pretty sheep usually.

I'd check with John, firegod, first though he might be able to set you up.

Sparky, I have been waiting for him to get up and running. I need a set for
my '66. He's been kinda scarce lately.
halon314, I have a set of those on mine. I don't like them beacuse of lack
of groung clearance. I would recomend Firegod's. More ground clearance.
    IMHO.

I made a set for mine. Some folks probably wouldn't want to drill holes in the body, but I didn't mind...

Not sure how rugged they would actually be -- might look good so long as you don't offroad your jeep. I've bent/split those things just rolling over dirt hills -- let along a rocky path.

Most people run 1/4 or 3/16 steel for offroad.

I have some like that on my '66. Had them on my '76 and both '73s...I like them....They have kept my body off of several trees in the past...I didn't lose any ground clearance since they mount to the frame and don't hang any lower

    Question

I made a set of nerf bars for my jeep and much to my dismay I could not mount the driver's side because of the front frame mount either interfered with the travel of the clutch arm or the master cylinder.

How do you work around that?

    Weld directly to the frame.

Mine were bolted to the frame. Had to drill some holes, which I didn't like. The nerfs
basically were @ the same height as the frame. The linkage and mc were higher in
the frame. I'm wanting to go w/ the rocker rails mentioned before. And weld
a plate to cover the drilled holes. I doubt these will hold up when abused.

I might have to take another look and see if I can work it out. What I made is out of 2 x 4 x 1/4 tubing. I made a set of rocker guards like Timmy's but I can not bring myself to drill holes in the side of jeep.

Scott, I have the same reservations about the holes. I hated drilling
them in the frame. I can't imagine the grief I'll go thru when I mount
the rocker type. I like having the step but I also would like more
ground clearance. I'm even thinking of taking off the nerfs for Tellico.
Like I said I'm not sure how they would hold up.

One thing to remember at Tellico is that you are going pretty slow, so you may dent and scar them, but unless you get wild you probably will not ripp'em off.

I have some of firegod's RockRash rails. I haven't put them on yet, but here's some pics. Be easy to fab some up.
