Net boot on t90, really stiff.
Yesterday while pulling someone out of ditch, when shifting from 1st to rev without looking(was looking backwards), it pulled itself out of 1st to neutral. Got to messimg with shorter and it would spring itself back to neutral bout half of the time?
Is this normal on a new boot? Will it soften up?
I rolled the little top nipple inside out and it seemed to help, bu5 it will come back out! 1535382722110748588759.jpg

That shouldn’t happen with the new boot installed, even if the rubber is not as pliable as the old worn out one.

Body alignment, engine and trans mounts?

I would keep the nipple up and out. These transmissions get ruined if rain leaks in from the shifter lever.

Mine did that until the new boot broke in. Not saying it should, but it did. In most cases the cheap boots you get today will just crack and tear apart within a year anyway, and then it won't do in anymore.

I think a NOS M38A1 boot might be better quality. They fit from under the floor plate rather than over it, but are truly water tight.

Try pushing it down as far as it will go and tightening a zip tie either around the boot, or around the shifter just above to boot to keep it in place.

Those boots are junk, try looking for the ones listed for an AC Cobra. I had 2 of them and finally tossed them and bought one of these. It worked right out of the package and has been in there for 12-13 years now.

The Omix boots are worthless. I used this boot - Amazon.com: Mr. Gasket 1651 Shifter Boot: Automotive - looks the same as what Mike recommends.

No experience with the non-synchro B-W 3-speeds, but I believe the 1st-R gears simply slide on the main shaft. This means the only thing holding them in gear is the fit of the gears (wear!) and the detents in the shift top. Might be worthwhile to look at the exploded drawing for the shift top and consider if the detent springs need replacing. If the main shaft or sliding gear are worn so badly that the shift boot pushes them out of gear, it might be time for some new parts.

Didn't do it with no boot, or with the last boot, bellows style, so Don't get me worried something internal is wrong? Don't do it since I rolled the lip down! The boot is really firm and stiff.
I'll roll the lip back out tomorrow, and push it down and install zip the.
    Thanks.
And yes it's kinda cheap (5.99).

Does anyone know where to get the metal ring that holds down the shifter boot on a 64 cj5. I have the one for the 2 transfer case shifters

I flipped the end back out, zip tied it and pushed it down a little to relax it.
Seems to be ok now. 20180828_164724.jpg

It seems like all the re-popped boots aren't worth even putting on, even if they were free. I have a single stick transfer case, and put a clutch fork rubber from a V 6 on it looked cool for about a month then fell apart. The answer seems to be find a vinyl one that is sown that will fit.

And what about a boot for my homemade twin stick?
Is their a reasonable priced one that won't rip in a few months?
