I can't figure out what size socket to use on these V6 spark plugs. I tried 5/8, 11/16, and 13/16. Does anyone know off hand what size they are?

What year is your jeep? Mine is a 75 and it uses the 13/16" socket just had to go buy a new one.

I have a 231 V6, but assuming they are the same, mine took a 13/16. I could barely get a regular socket to bite on the plugs at all, but a 13/16 6-point spark plug socket worked alright.

I have discovered that it is a 13/16, however I tried one but I could not get it to go on, it's like there is not enough space around the plug to get it on. I don't understand because I don't own any thin walled sockets and I put these in years ago! What is going on? Maybe the other 13/16 I own but don't have with me is a thin walled and I just didn't realize it.

On some heads the hole around the plug is real tight.. I had to go buy a 6 point socket and turn it down to fit on the plug.. I am considering a bit of grinding to clearance these when I pull the heads..

    Bubba,
I might just do that tommorow. Or, just grind down a socket real far so that it will fit.

Yeah it does not need much so be careful no to go through the important part of the socket! A good 6 point craftsman seems to work best..

Are you guys using a regular spark plug socket or just a plain old socket. There are sockets made specifically for spark plugs, they are deep, have thin walls and a rubber boot in the bottom to hold the plug once it is free.

I had to turn down a 6spark plug socket to get it to fit on my plugs on my 225.( BAD DESIGN) I only have snap on and craftsman tools so no cheap thick wall junk, just didnt have one that would fit, Get a bench grinder and go to work making a socket a thin wall to get them out.

Yeah mike it is a proper 6 point plug socket but some castings on the 225 heads had some core shift and the plug recess in the heads is a bit tight so the socket does not fit quite right, I think the earlier dauntless engines had more of a prob with it but it seems to be more common on the pre 68 heads...

Resurrecting an old thread. I found out this morning, and did the same thing, ground down the outside of my socket. Glad to know I'm not the only one with this problem!

This is what I use to remove the plugs from my 225 Dauntless. Can't remember where I got it from, think it came with a chainsaw! Has to be 30 years ago.
5/8" one end, 15/16" the other end.
    Hey it works, lol!

That is what I was thinking, Roy. I have a collection of those from 50 years of tool kits from different machines. Honda motorcycles you have to have the socket that came with the Bike. Good Luck

I remember this being a pain in the *** but I did get a standard spark plug socket to fit, maybe it was an older craftsman style?
