Fuel Pump Help

    I think I'm going crazy. I'm replacing my :v6: fuel pump for reliability reasons - the old one is aging a little and I'd hate to be in the boonies when it decides to quit.
    So - I take out the old one put in the new one - along the way replace some of the old fuel line, put in a new inline filter, hook it all back up and... nothing. I can crank all day and get nothing. Its like it isn't pumping. I filled the gas tank and still nothing. The new filter is clear so I can see that no fuel is going through. So that leaves me with 2 options that I can think of.

    1) I have to somehow prime the fuel pump. I havent read or heard anything about this process so I would need some advice in these regaurds.

    2) The new fuel pump is installed wrong. I believe that I repaced it the same way it came out. The little arm sets on a little cam in there. I didn't know that there was a wrong way to do this.

    Side note- I am also finishing up a HEI conversion. I figured as long as I was on that side of the engine - may as well take care of both of them. I have put the timing light it as it cranks and I am getting spark (slowly).

    If someone can help PLEASE that would be much appreciated.

    BTDT. It sounds like the operating arm isn't hitting the cam. My original
    pump had a spacer in it to reach the cam. The new one I bought actually
    fit fine w/out the spacer. After all that I went to an electrical pump. I can
    take a couple of pictures of the old one.
    Hold them side by side and check the length of the arms. My guess is the new
    one has a shorter arm. Good luck!!

    Dissapointment. The arms are exactly the same. Same length, same bends. There was even a little oil mark where it his the cam - the same spot where it's worn a little on the old one. Hmmm..

    have you tried putting the old one back in? maybe the new one is bad......just a thought.

    OK.. I just went and double checked all my work. It seems ok. Question though - which port is the intake and which is the out? on the new one there are 3 ports

    1) Threaded one facing somewhat toward the exhaust manifold. I believe that is the input.

    2) Large (1/4") nipple facing down. I believe this is the Output to the carb.

    3) Small nipple facing down. I believe this is a return to the tank which I have none so I sealed a machine screw in to plug it up.

    If this is not correct - let me know.

    the 1/4 inch should be the inlet and the other the outlet.

    once you figure out what is the inlet and what is the outlet, put the pump in a vise. run a hose to the inlet. put the other end of the hose in a can with some fuel in it. start pumping the arm up and down. if fuel sprays out the outlet, then your pump is good and the problem is elsewhere. nows a good time to replace the fuel filter too...

    Problem solved. I had in/out mixed up :oops: . On my old pump there were different fittings facing different directions. I just re connected the hoses in approx. the same positions. The new pump has the fittings in different positions. I guess there was a change in pump layout around 68-69 and I had both pumps... short story long - Its all fixed now. I just have to dial in my new HEI then I'll be ready to go.
