Installed a new oil pan gasket and resealed the bearing cap and pan for the t-case. Hopefully I found where I went wrong and I have the leaks under control.

IMG_0409.JPG Today I finished my head gasket replacement, replaced valve seals, and gas tank replacement. Everything went well then...... started to over heat, cooled down drove home.

Today I decided to set my timing before heading to church (gotta get those greasy thumb prints all over the hymnal pages, yanno). I discovered that the points are about shot, but dressed and set them anyway. Then I discovered that the distributor is seized in the block. :/ Commencing PB Blaster treatments for a few days before resorting to more ape-like measures....

Of course filing and setting the points changed the timing a little, I guess, and it's acting like it's over-retarded even more than it already was. Oh well, I don't need to go >30mph anyway.

Later today I went to visit a neighbor who has a better machine shop than I do.

Apparently I had PB Blasted the distributor enough. I put a pipe wrench on the housing (he had a junk CJ5 in the woods that we were going to steal a distributor off of if I broke mine), and it finally broke loose after making Ape Noises. I cleaned it up (including all the gunk down in the spark advance), applied anti-seize, and reinstalled it. Re-set the points with a proper dwell meter and timed it. Cylinders 1 and 4 fail to fire at idle (always) and when the engine is cold (at all rpms), but once it warms up it runs like a scalded dog when above idle.

Then we ground off the welds and rivets on the wallowed out Ross bellcrank mount on the frame, and drove the rivets out with an air chisel. Then built up the wallowed out inside with braze and milled it out to 0.002 over the diameter of the pin that goes through.

I wish I could afford a milling machine!

Then bolted and welded the bellcrank mount back onto the frame.... Now other than the Ross box itself needing rebuilt, the steering is tighter than it ever has been. I only have about a quarter turn of free play instead of 3/4 turn now, LOL. It's stable enough to run down the road a full speed. But I don't know what speed that is, because the speedometer has never worked, and it's faster than I trust the brakes anyway.

Next I will put plugs, wires, distributor cap, and new points in it, and see if that clears up the idle problem. It needs them all anyway. If that doesn't do it, then my next guess is valves, which are next on the list anyway. It does pop a little still even after being timed, but my exhaust pipe is rusty and leaky so I don't know if it's leaky exhaust pipe pop or leaky exhaust valve pop.

Today I replaced my speedometer cable, hoping that would fix it. Well, I took off down the road, the speedometer blipped a couple of times, and then I heard the new cable break. Lol. I guess I should have checked and lubed the speedometer first. >_>

Also turned the idle speed down a little, by ear. Seems to have helped with the exhaust popping a good bit, but it still misses on 1 and 4 a whole lot until the engine warms up. Parts for an ignition rebuild are on the way, though.

Then I "fixed" my missing lower rubber generator bushing by wrapping the bolt with electrical tape until it was a tight fit in the slot where the rubber is supposed to be, and torqued it down. Seems to be working fine so far. Drove the jeep up the road about 10 miles to rake some hay, and couldn't hear the generator rattling anymore.

Just finished painting my 1966 CJ5.

Reproduced the origin Gold Beige metallic, Jeep color code 393, purchased at Sherwin Williams commercial paints.

Used two pint cans of base color, each spray was a mixture of base color in 2:1 ratio with reducer. Then I followed with gloss/hardener mixed in 4:1 ratio. Cleaned gun by spraying solvent at each paint session. The job took a few days word spread over about two weeks.

Painted with my old Sears compressor and spray gun.

Brown grill and red bumper are my embelishments, using Rustoleum spray cans purchased at Home Depot.

I had to do some Bonding and sanding -- which is a big pain, so I was not able to get perfection. Masking is a big pain too. Spraying if fun!

I have not yet done the wheels. The color code is 245, but I cannot find on-line. I'll probably have to get a Rustoleum can that matches the off-white.

Most excellent haighfam! Your yellow will make the car snobs eyes tear. Wonder if my current traveller, Peppy can ever look so great as your 57.

67-Jeepster091.JPG << so far my quickie rust check seems OK. Have to attack more rust. Patina is one thing, patina making holes is another....

Went to the local car show today. Won the King of the Mountain Trophy (Peoples Choice Award). Judges told me I actually won best truck also, but were only giving one trophy per vehicle.

The car guys were a little up in arms that I won. Our community has a large 4-wheeling community and I think they appreciated seeing a jeep at a car show. But then there was this:

Looks more driveable than the one in the ad I posted at OWF. The guy I bought the PU frame from is selling the "rat rod". It has a 3/4 plywood floor bolted directly to the frame and the sides are contoured to fit the cab. You can see the results:

The guys at OWF all agreed at least there is access to the master cylinder. Most were speechless. It was 5K first posted. Dropped to 4500 Friday morning. Here's the link:
