May have to replace the rear mounted tank on a 72 CJ5. TSM calls for the tank to be 16gl capacity. All the replacements are 15gl that I can find. Just want to make sure that the size is still close enough to make the swap a plug and play, or are there going to be some tweaks to get the new one in. Is there any MFR whose tanks I should avoid? Thanks

Can't remember the brand of the one I used, but for my 73 it's 15 gal capacity.

The later manuals say "15.5 gallons." It is proper to round to the nearest even number when rounding an exact half. So there's no contradiction. There are differences between the '72 and earlier tanks and the '73-75 tanks. On the earlier tanks, the vapor recovery plumbing coming from each corner is external, and the later tanks have internal vapor recovery plumbing. It appears that the tanks with external plumbing are not available. Omix-Ada offers the '73-75 tank as a direct replacement for the earlier tank, whiich is mostly true if you have enough understanding of the fuel system to plumb the earlier expansion tank into the fewer outlets on the later tank.

Look at the TSM for 1972 and for 1974, and compare the pictures of the plumbing. The size and shape of the tanks is the same, but they connect differently to the vapor recoery plumbing.

Pretty sure your choices are a steel tank (Spectra?) or a plastic tank. Pretty sure the plastic tanks all come from MTS. Don't buy the Omix-Ada tank that they say fits 1972.
