Modifying A Dana 44

Thanks everyone for the clarification, I was thinking of the narrow width as well.

Like I said previously, I would rather have the 60" WMS axle stock and just outboard the springs. Less things to modify, and with the fab part suppliers out there like Ruff Stuff Specialties (cheap plug), it's easy to outboard springs. And bonus, it's already setup to run YJ springs!!

 

If I end up shortening the front axle to stock width, could I use the backing plates and a new 5 lug drum to convert my rear offset 44 to the bigger 11" brakes as well?

 

Yes. One of the easiest and best upgrades you can do to an old Jeep is go to 11" brakes on all four corners.

 

is there a certain specific model that works if i go to the local parts store and ask for a brake drum for ...? since the spindles have been mentioned from a 1985 f150, will those brake drums also work for the rear?

 

A quick search should give you a dozen threads on this.

 

I used a 1972 CJ5 back axle Brakes on my offset 1971 CJ5. All the 1972 stuff bolted right in and has the 5 on 5.5 Lug Pattern. I'm not sure about the F150 parts.
I have a 1973 Ford Econoline E200 and I bet the drums would work. Just make sure the Center hole fits your axle and the drum fits inside the wheels you plan on using. (some have fins for cooling and make them to big of an OD)
Sounds like a good plan using the waggy back brakes and 1972 CJ5 drums. Or just stay with the six lug all the way around depending on your wheel choice.

 

that sounds simple enough. I dont care if it is ford or dodge or jeep. I was just really looking for a specific model year of something i can write down in my Chilton's manual to be able to order easily instead of fumbling around with kids that dont know how to modify old vehicles at the parts store.
