Dana 20 Transfer Case

I am rebuilding a dana 20 transfer case. When i took it apart i forgot to mark where the gears go. Are the front output shaft sliding gear and the rear output shaft sliding gear interchangeable. They look the same. How do I tell them apart. Thanks in advance

 

My only suggestion is to find the exploded parts diagram at oljeep.com and see if you can figure it out from there. Maybe someone in the know will chime in.

 

The gears are marked with Dana part numbers. If they are not the same number, they are not the same gear. This chart from Novak tells you the part numbers of each of the gears. The Novak Guide to Dana 18 & 20 Gears Interchange 1941-1979 You will have to look through the table and compare the numbers.

I'm assuming this is a transfer case for a 1973 CJ-5. If you look at the parts book, it will show you the part numbers and either the Dana part number or the tooth count - enough info to ID the gears. My book says the front output shaft sliding gear has 31 teeth and is a 933735. The rear output shaft sliding gear is a 18-8-26, Jeep PN 933742. You should check this with the Novak table.

Really, I kinda think it simply won't go together with the gears switched. Don't want to seem like a scold, but I expect you learned something about servicing transmissions. Mark your parts, take pictures, make notes, all of the above.
