I was talking to my brother-in-law yesterday about my 69 CJ5. He works for the State inspecting the inspection stations.

You do not need anything on your Jeep that was an option when it was purchased. The top and doors were options on Jeeps up to at least '71.

Also you can add fender flares up 3" beyond the factory's. Since the early Jeeps did not come with any flares from factory, you can add up to 3" flares to cover wider tires.

Also the police can not arrest you for not having doors if they were an option. Of course the town I live in will look for other violations!!

I will also add that there has been conflict by troopers in PA (personal experience) about driving with the windshield down.

I always wondered about the windsheild deal and have been wanting to ask a cop about that. The only trouble I ever came across was my side view mirrors. Mine originally had just a drivers side mirror and I caught some heck from a cop. I told him it didn't have one from the factory and he didn't believe me, until I showed him the registration proving it was a '58.

I've had mine inspected many times without the top. Shouldn't be a problem.
    Where are you located Shooter?

Somewhere, and I can't tell you where or when, I thought I read that traveling with the windshield down required wearing goggles.

After all, if you can't see, that presents a problem in negotiating your way through the subdivision.

I would think it would be legal to drive with the windshield down while wearing goggles. How would that be any different then riding a motorcycle.

The issue may be with the rear view mirror, std. equipment on the windshield.

FWIW, I just got off the phone with my Pa. State trooper buddy. He said "tops don't matter but you'd better have a side view mirror on it". He said they're considered a convertible anyway so tops don't matter.

When I was a kid, I remember getting stopped in my GPW because of the windshield being folded down. My dad didn't get a ticket, but there was an argument.

Hard for the cops to see the inspection sticker with the windshield down. That's was the reason the officer gave me. As for the getting it inspected, I was only hassled once by a mech who refused to inspect it with no doors. The book calls all Jeeps Jeep Wranglers which I believe all came with atleast half doors. After arguing with this wrench for 10 minutes about tops being an option back in 71, I finally told him to go get *^#*ed and left. Got the JEEP inspected across the street from that place the next day.
