    I cannot remember...

Reason I'm asking is I'm trying to awaken my sleeping OF and the engine will turn over by hand about 270 degrees and then comes to a stop. I haven't turned it over with the starter yet and won't until I figure out why it's stopping.

It's been sitting, covered since it last ran 7 or 8 years ago and I'm wondering if I have a valve that's stuck open and therefore making contact with a piston.

Will probably pull the valve covers today or tomorrow to see what's up with valve train and look for a pushrod that's loose but thought I'd ask first. If it's not an interference engine, then I'll have to scratch my head for a few minutes. Engine turns over smoothly by hand (breaker bar on crank nut) both directions.

Other possibilities in my mind: rust ring in one of the cylinders not allowing a piston to go all the way up.
problem in tranny? (it's in neutral)
    gremlins?

Does it turn the same distance both ways?

As you mentioned............Might be rust at the top of one cylinder that the rings cannot get by.............wherever it stops look in all the spark plug holes............or pull the heads before you do more damage.

    Glenn, yes...or very close.

tarry99, gonna pull valve covers first, and then the heads if I cannot see the issue there.

I should have asked if you meant 270 total or 270 both ways.

I'm having a brain fart here so let me ask how many revolutions does it take for each piston to have made a full stroke.

Have you tried rotating it with the plugs out? How is the radiator coolant level? Ok? Low? If so, was it ok when you quit driving it. Maybe a slow leak into a cylinder?

Havent pulled the plugs yet. Havent checked coolant. It ran fine when parked. (How many times have you heard that?) I quit driving it mostly because i started playing with Harleys... and was overseas, back again. Overseas, back again, blah blah blah. Then decided one day to build a good back bumper to match my front. Next thing you know, the tub is off, I still haven't built that bumper, and its been a few years.

    Fail on my part.

Anyway, I'm going to start on it again and enjoy it with the family. Anyone want 3 Harleys?

I would do like you suggested and pull the rocker assemblies off and try to rotate it again. If a valve is stuck down you will be able to see it (which I suspect) and beat on the valves with rubber hammer. I have done this a few times. Hope yours will be as easy.

Appreciate the theory confirmation, Walt. I'll keep everyone posted.
