I recently got a 1960 CJ6 and I'm smelling too much exhaust while idling and driving. It looks like the current exhaust system isn't stock. The muffler sits near the center of the undercarriage and is oriented to stretch from front to back instead of sideways. The tailpipe is about 9" long coming out of the muffler.

This kit is supposed to fit:

Should I be able to grab that and bring it up to spec? If so how many hangers would I need? Any special tools? I can't do any welding.

Is your engine an F4? If so that will probably work for you but I'm always leery about stuff from JC Whitney, this one-

    Complete Exhaust 4 Cylinder CJ2A, CJ3A, CJ3B, CJ5, FC 150 Models

is probably a bit better quality & comes with the hangers.

The current setup is definitely your issue, the tailpipe really needs to exit at a rear corner to keep the smell manageable, try a search here for "exhaust smell" for previous discussions.

    Welcome :)

Thank you but that one says it doesn't fit a CJ6 due to the extra length. Is there a CJ6 one you like?

You should be able to make the system from Walck's work by adding a straight piece of pipe, 20" long. That's the only difference between the CJ-5 and CJ-6. If you can come straight back from the slip joint, you could add the 20" section there. Otherwise you'd have to cut the long pipe somewhere in the middle and add the extension. I would call Walck's and talk it over with them.

If this system is made like the original Jeep parts, the component for the CJ-6 with the extra length would use as many of the CJ-5 parts as possible. So it might be really easy to make it work.

Another possibility is to visit your local muffler shop that makes custom exhausts and see what they can do for you. Any competent shop could build a whole new system for you.

Or at the minimum they could add the difference.

I ordered the exhaust system from Walcks. He said that it would work to add a straight 20" section of pipe for a CJ6. Anyone know of a place to get that section online? I'd like to pull this off without running to the exhaust shop if possible.

Did Walck's tell you what diameter pipe you need? You'll need to get a piece 20" or longer with a slip fit on one end.

I've used the local shops for things like this. They'll measure and flare/taper or whatever it's called to make things slip on just right. Use exhaust clamps to secure the joints.

I work at a Napa. I got everything there for my CJ5. It all fit nice with no mods. I had a leak in mine under the drivers seat. Plus it was bent to be under the frame and outside of frame. The Napa/Walker stuff put it back inside the frame and exits at the right rear corner. Muffler is under rear seat area. Sounds nice and quiet.

It can fit both. The instructions will tell you to cut 20" off of one of the pipes for the CJ-5.

I would be wary of Omix-Ada parts.

From the previous posts, the OP has already bought the exhaust system from Walck's.

Dang. I'd sure prefer not to have to find a 20" section of tailpipe. I'll see if Walck's can cancel my order. If not, should I be able to replace one of the pipes in the Walck's kit with this:

Intermediate Exhaust Pipe; 46-71 Willys and Jeep Models

    Reference:
    Complete Exhaust 4 Cylinder CJ2A, CJ3A, CJ3B, CJ5, FC 150 Models

I don't think that pipe you're listing is any different from the one you'll get from walcks.

What's the issue with drooping by a muffler shop to get a 20" pipe made up?

OK I'll just take the Walck's kit to a muffler shop and have them install it. What would be a fair price for that? Any instructions I should give them except that I want everything welded so there are no clamps used?

You should be able to handle the install yourself, just bolt everything in & figure out how long a new piece you need & get that made up at the shop.

I'd recommend the clamps over welding.

Aren't clamps more prone to leaking than welding is?
