Well, there's no points with an HEI, so I could have a worn out Dist. Or a worn out module.

I'll go through the vacuum test and double check the mixture.

Well, there are no points with the HEI so I guess the Dist. or the module could be bad. The vacuum is acting normal as per the information above.

I feel this is all to no avail if the timing chain was installed incorrectly. But if I pull the timing cover and find it is correct, Ill probably be posting on the quitters club. I am going to post a new thread with my original question asked more directly and pick this one back up if the new proves unfruitful. Stay tuned.

I'll be poking a hornet's nest by saying this. But in my limited experience electronic ignition modules can go bad in wierd and inconsistent ways that are very hard to diagnose logically.

In the end I've just had to do a replacement, and see if it helped.

That's not a bad idea, I think I'll pick one up and rule that out. It wouldn't hurt to have an extra one kickin' around just in case.

How about fuel delivery? you could have a fuel pump going out., Or partially blocked fuel lines. Or goofed up fuel pickup. Or maybe the carb needs freshening up.

I rebuilt the carb, adjusted it with a vacuum gauge, and have 2 solid streams on the accelerator pump so I think I'm good on carburation.

Tell you what, try disconnecting and capping the vacuum advance on the distributor and see what difference that makes on your top end speeds.
