I've read the thread on issues with it running better on partial choke. That is one of my symptoms. Jeep ran fine until I went to the gas station that sells non ethanol fuel. I put in 3/4 of a tank and headed back home. About 15 minutes later it wouldn't run unless it was fully choked. Take it off choke and it would die 5-10 seconds later but idle beautifully while crapping out. I drained gas to find it was the color of gatorade and smelled like paint thinner. I changed plugs and put in fresh gas. Now it won't idle unless 100% choked or if off choke with idle set way to high to be safe. It also sputters and pops while doing this. I am going to do a full rebuild with one of Mikes carb kits tomorrow. While spending amazing amounts of time looking at my engine I have noticed 2 things with the carb. There is a manual choke kit on it and its missing the choke rod and the shaft and cam inside the choke housing. The butterfly is worked by the manual choke. Is this adding to my issues or will a rebuild fix whatever that "gas" ate in the carb?

Post a picture or two of the throttle linkage side of the carb.

Did you drain all of the gas out of the tank? This almost sounds like the biggest problem is the crappy gas is barely combustible. Can't rule out a plugging up fuel filter of course. Dirty storage tank at the gas station?

I can get some pictures of the linkage tomorrow. It was running okay with the choke pieces removed, so I doubt that is causing me any issues now but was just curious.

I drained the tank. I'm going to put new filters on it and tear down the carb. Really annoying that I got it running smooth and got to enjoy it all of two days.

As far as the gas station goes, everyone who went there for the real gas got screwed. I don't think it was gas at all. Its almost like it was a byproduct or an entire tank of additive. Never seen anything like it.

    This.

I think it's probably a fuel delivery related problem.

How long had the Jeep been sitting prior to your 2 days of happy driving? If it's been awhile you could have stirred up some crud...It doesn't take much to clog the carb's arteries. You can buy a fuel additive that combats the ethanol. This stuff is great - Star Tron Enzyme Fuel Treatment Gas Additive Shooter

It had been sitting for a few weeks so I imagine that is the main issue. I'll check out the star fighter, I'm not using that gas station again.

You said you got NON ethanol fuel. The non-ethenol fuel should not effect your jeep like that. Sounds like the tank got contaminated some way. Wonder what it did to injected vehicles.

Mine sits for longer at a time and runs fine...I don't see how weeks could be a problem? I was thinking maybe you'd say months or even years.
I usually get gas at the same place (Costco), but on occasion I'll stop almost anywhere for convenience...Never an issue in any of my vehicles. When I had my KTM I would go stock up at a non ethanol station until I found "Star Tron".

Rebuilt the carb this weekend. It had some sort of funk all over the inside of it. I cleaned, put back together, and put back on. It fired right up with high idle. I did some adjusting and got it set to a nice smooth idle with good throttle response. Ran awesome on the test run. It sat overnight and the next day I went out to drive it and the idle is crazy high. Even when the idle is run all the way down it idles really high. I checked all vacuum and there are no leaks. Is there anything else I could look for that would be causing my high idle now?

Look down into the throttle plates to make sure they are closed.

Well that bugger has to have air with fuel to run. The more air and fuel the higher the RPM. That means that with the throttle plates closed, the engine is getting air somewhere below the throttle plates. No other way that can happen.

Distributor timing advance would make it idle higher. Did you do anything with it? Any chance it was loose and you bumped it? Just throwing that out there in case it's nothing obvious with the carb or linkage.
