I have built a gas tank to go under the 56 cj6. I have tested it with air pressure and foaming carpet cleaner. seems to be tight. I did a search on this site for sealers, and got many diff. thoughts. still unsure what to do. anybody have absolute thoughts on this. will it rust once it has gas in it. have the new ones been sealed before you buy them?

Don't know if it will rust or not..

Kinda related here. I had a ATV with a rusted tank. I used a mix of muratic acid (swimming pool acid) and water. Put a few washers and nuts in it and got the rust out.. Rinsed with water then rubbing alcohol... I used a product called kreem.. Got it at a bike shop.. It coated the tank with a white plastic.. Held up fine for me..

Www.kreem.com. There's a link to distributors near you.. Ebay may have it cheaper and in a larger quantity.

. A small bottle lined a Kawasaki 3.5 gallon tank....

May be a idea or thought for you??

I've used the POR15 sealer on 3 tanks including a Jeep tank. Never had a problem. The Honda tank I did is going on 15 years now.

I have used the Hirsch tank sealer http://www.hirschauto.com/Gas-Tank-Sealer-_-Repair/products/4/ on the CJ-6 tank. It took about two full days of prep and coating to do the whole job.

If it's a tank made with new steel, I'd think you could coat it with whatever you choose, as long as it has the proper chemical resistance. AFAIK the POR-15 product is simply their MCU coating, repackaged for sale as a tank sealer. I like the MCU from Progressive Epoxy http://www.epoxyproducts.com/aluthane.html - Aluthane - should be as good or better than the POR-15 product. Note that MCU is unaffected by liquid hydrocarbons like gasoline, but can be softened by oxygenated solvents like alcohols. Give Progressive Epoxy a call or email and describe what you want to do.

POR15 tank sealer used to be called US Standard Tank Sealer. It was their original product. That's what it was named when I bought it. They have renamed it POR15 Tank Sealer and I'm going to assume they reformulated it because it is comparable with Stage II fuels with high alcohol content.

Not meaning to diss the POR-15 stuff, but when I researched this I found a few horror stories about the POR-15 tank sealer. Just FYI. Maybe these customers did not prep the tank properly - I don't know. But I notice that Caswell tells you how to salvage tanks coated with POR-15 or Kreem that are now peeling (using their product of course!) - so I suspect these coatings must fail on occasion. Hirsch also has a story to tell about those "other products" which I assume include POR-15 - there are application notes at the link I gave. Additionally, the tank sealers come with specific instructions for (tediously) preparing the tank by cleaning and etching. They assume that you are repairing an old and rusty tank - and that's not what you have here.

The paint manufacturers sell many products that are meant to be compatible with various chemicals. If you look on the Ben Moore or PPG sites under commercial coatings, there are dozens of different coatings that are indicated for tank lining and such. I think it's likely that a paint chemist could tell you what generic product you could use for this purpose - thus I suggested that you call Progressive Epoxy.

I used some stuff from O Riley , it was like $30.00 or so, RED in color, smelled like model airplane glue. It was easy to use. I followed instructions , ((((((really)))) it worked great an easy. let it dry .
I used a 6 ft length of chain an 2 grandsons to tumble the tank, wash it out, after dry (a few days) same grandsons to tumble with stuff in it:)

For those without cooperative grandchildren, I have heard of strapping the tank on to the front end of a cement mixer...
