I just installed a DUI distributor to my 73 CJ5, took it for a test drive and notice oil leaking from the cap. This never leaked before so I am thinking could be due to timing. Why would this happen?

    Thanks

Its not your timing. I read about this a few years ago when I swapped to a HEI. I forget the cause, but basically oil is riding up the distributer shaft from the cam and distributer gear and into your cap. I cant remember what the cause or cure was.. I was reading about the HEI swap on hot rod forums when I read about this.

This is for the HEI but I think the DUI is nearly the same. Items #20 and #21 shown above may be missing from your unit.

Sorry I didn't explain it correctly in my original post. The leak is not from the distributor cap, it is from the actual valve cover oil cap.

We have been running DUI dizzys since they came out. All 4 that we bought brand new wicked oil up into the cap. Last season, we changed the primary car to an MSD billet Hei and no more oil under the cap. DUI went into the pit cart as a spare.

Just a thought, but do you have breathers on the engine? IE: valve cover breathers, oil cap breather? Asking because you could be building crank case pressure which is pushing oil out your engine at the easiest place. I had this problem when I first got mine going, but I had no PCV. The PCV fixed my problem, and I also put breathers on everything.

My PCV is at the front of the valve cover, the hose goes to a T where it splits to the vacuum at the throttle body and the charcoal canister purge. The rear vent hose goes to the air cleaner. Should I have something different? What is the right PCV part number? the number on mine is 2117.

I have no idea of the correct pcv valve for your engine. my engine is a very early chevy v8 so they are different. Others would be able to tell you though, and the correct routing if yours is wrong. The routing of my pcv system is a bit different, I have what they call a road draft tube and my pcv comes off the carb to the road draft tube and from what others have told me, I don't need any other connections in my system because I have breathers on the valve covers and a vented oil cap.

Fixed the issue . My timing was way off creating too much pressure.

Ha, don't listen to me anymore, I said in my first response that I didn't think it was the timing, lol. o_O Glad you got it.
