2X4 frame for my CJ2A

    My dad laughed his @$$ off when I finally told him where all the PT 4x4's, that he used as fence posts, came from. I had quite the collection. :D:D

    Its so bad. What I did was terrible. There was almost nothing left to work with and nothing i had was straight or flat. i used my old frame to build this body off of and it was twisted. That was almost 10 years ago. It didn't heal itself.

    Its only sheet metal. Nothing that can't be fixed with a cut off wheel, welder and flap disk...

    Just clamp a cunck of tube steel from side to side accross the back. On top that is. It should allow you to pull both sides up even at the back and you can check the side to side overall dimension before you start welding it back up. 3/4" tube steel is great at holding body panels in place in times like this.

    These pics are 8or 9 years ago and I was almost"finished" with the body at this point. I had lengthened the frame and body.

    Whats making my head explode is the fact that the passenger side of the body cants up at an angle that side about 1 1/2 inches off the level of the rear bumper/mount. I didn't make it right, the frame was twisted, and when i cut the wheel wells to fit big tires I had to get into that mess I welded together that holds it all together. When I crank down on the corner Its just not right. I have several sheets of 0.185 sheet. I am contemplating cutting out the remaining wheelhouse and making the entire rear bed/wheelhouse out of it. I may have to cut the side panel to get rid of the pucker too.

    I thought I was not going to do this. I guess now is the time to cut all of the suspect garbage out?

    Wow...........Looks like you were getting ready to do battle with all of that armor plating on that body.............Hey , at this point in time........"It is what it is".... I'll give you credit for Fortitude........most including me would have probably abandoned that body long ago................Carry On!

    where I live can be like a scene from "Escape from New York" at times. Sometimes i feel like Snake Plisskin. That toolbox has my little welder in it and a case of beer and thats why this jeep is the way it is. Kind of like a "here hold my beer" slow motion screwup with a welder and a grinder. I do things better now because i don't do that.

    The wheelhouses came apart real nice actually.

    I plan on making a solid rear panel to square up the back and tack it in while I fab up new wheelhouses. I am putting in a rear filler for the rear tank and the filler neck protector needs to go in the passenger rear, so I have to leave accommodation for that. Filler protector and hoses are enroute.

    I really wanted to just do a frame. this is out of hand. I renewed my registration/parking permit/insurance today cause its due. Wishfull thinking.

    I have been trying to abandon this body since I got it. Everything is in same or worse shape and my only option is new, cut it apart, lengthen it and go from there. Its what the original plan was, but I just can't commit to it. i have been in search of a decent 2a/3a/3b/m38 tub for almost 10 years. No luck anywhere within 500 miles.

    I would never rebuild this like i originally did. Its embarrassing actually. My only hope is that others will see this and learn from my issues. I can only hope that I can be happy with this in the spring when i am driving it. The frame and differentials and steering I am very happy with.

    Like Warlock said..........it's only metal , sparks and welding..........You'll be the only critic here so beauty is in the eye of the beholder............I'm sure when I cut up my CJ-5 folks thought I was crazy!
    Just think with a few more body panels , you'll have the new body you have been wanting!

    Heres panel number one. Should have done this a long time ago.

    The sheet is 0.185 or about 3/32 thick. Its thick, its free and its great. I bent the bottom and the drivers side flange by scoring a straight line with a straight edge using an angle grinder with a 4 1/2 cut off wheel. I do not have a brake so I clamped it to my table and bent it with a big pair of channel locks.The passanger side has no flange because that panel didn't either. Have to butt weld it, but thats ok since the filler neck is going right about there anyway.

    This panel is fine, but was about 2 inches high at the rear. I couldn't stand it. I will tack it to the new straight tailgate filler and fix the issue.

    I ended up welding a flange to both the rear panel and the side panel. It would have been easier to just bend one when i cut it out, but whatever. Side panel is clamped in place. Have to fix where I cut it off.

    This is so easy with a straight nice frame. Gonna get the willys from the tailgate cut out and welded on the drivers side bottom left of the rear panel. Does that mean it'll be an army jeep?
